Is visiting the Ninja museum in Iga-Ueno worth it during my trip to Japan?

Question:

I am planning the trip to Japan for this Winter.
I am interested to visit Iga-Ueno for the Ninja museum, the castle and the city trains painted with the colors of some anime.
My trip will be in 4 legs: Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Tokyo.
1. Should I stay overnight in Iga-Ueno or go for a day trip?
2. If I choose the day trip, should I do it from Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya?… See more

Eric oh you should be good. I've spent March and April there. It's amazing. Buy the JR rail pass

I wouldn’t do a night in Iga unless you’re looking for quiet small town Japan. As for getting there your best bet js probably from Nagoya. From Osaka or Kyoto you have tk go through Nara which has pretty awful connections. And if youre doing a lot of Mie, Osaka and Kyoto consider a Kintetsu rail pass instead of the JR one. Kintetsu has a good coverage of the Kinki area. And go to Yamachan izakaya if youre in Nagoya (theres about 100 of them) the tebasaki is amazing!

I'd recommend day trip as well. Not much else to do in Iga Ueno.

Osaka is not nearly as magical as Kyoto so if your day tripping I’d choose to do it from Osaka.

I’ve basically done this exact trip. I flew into Tokyo stayed at the night owl hostel in shibuya 5-6 days and then went to Nagoya and stayed with friends. Nagoya has a lot of historical castles and is worth staying at least 2-3 days. Afterwards Osaka, the hostels here are great. You can take an easy train and day trips from Osaka so I would suggest 5-8 days. I’d recommend the ever popular dontonburi it’s exactly as it’s pictured in pop culture I loved it!

We didn't leave enough time for Osaka. I'd spend at least a week if given the opportunity.

Collin It will be my first trip in Japan (excluding extended layover in Tokyo). I will stay flexible with my plans. I will be there for 17 days. The draft plans is: Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya 4 day each and 5 days in Tokyo to conclude the trip.

Planning a Trip to Japan for Winter

I am excited to visit Iga-Ueno for the Ninja museum, the castle, and the city trains painted with the colors of some anime. My trip will be in 4 legs: Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo.

Should I stay overnight in Iga-Ueno or go for a day trip?

It really depends on how much time you have and what your preferences are. If you want to fully explore Iga-Ueno and immerse yourself in the ninja culture, staying overnight could be a great option. This will allow you to visit the museum, explore the castle, and experience the city trains at a more leisurely pace.

On the other hand, if you are short on time or prefer to base yourself in one of the larger cities, a day trip to Iga-Ueno could also be a good choice. You can still visit the main attractions and get a taste of the ninja history without needing to spend the night.

If I choose the day trip, should I do it from Osaka, Kyoto, or Nagoya?

Considering your itinerary includes Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo, you could plan your day trip to Iga-Ueno from either Osaka, Kyoto, or Nagoya. Each of these cities offers easy access to Iga-Ueno via train or bus.

If you are staying in Osaka, it might be more convenient to do the day trip from there as it is closer to Iga-Ueno compared to Kyoto or Nagoya. However, if you are already planning to visit Kyoto or Nagoya, you could also make a day trip from either of those cities.

Ultimately, the decision will depend on your schedule and preferences. Whichever option you choose, Iga-Ueno is sure to offer a unique and memorable experience during your trip to Japan.
