Since your hotel is in little Italy, I suggest just get the service of uber/lyft. Having a car give you more liberty to explore more places. However, since your hotel location is in little italy, parking in hotel are expensive, plus the fact that you will overthinking that what if something happen to the car you rent
.
1. Gaslamp quarter
2. Petro Park

4. 2 hours cruise (beside the uss midway $20 for 2 hours cruise)

San Diego has an excellent light rail transit system with a stop right next to little Italy. The city is also very walkable. When we visited we were able to either walk or take the train wherever we wanted to go. The food in little Italy was excellent too! The Maritime museum and the aircraft carrier are excellent places to visit.

San Diego zoo is one of the best zoos, but it is quite far and big in size so give it a day for a visit for sure. The Sea world is a good place for this age and has some rides if your child is into it. Legoland is not too far from SD, but it all gets quite expensive if to do it all in one trip. There is free stuff as well (e.g. just a walk in old town).

Trolly is fun. Balboa Park is great. Many beaches close by. Buy the San Diego City Pass... purchase at Costco before you go. We did a harbor cruise which was very educational and fun.

We rent cars when we travel simply because we like the freedom of going where we want to go and when, stay how long we want and leave when we want without having to wait for an uber, find the damn uber car etc. Plus some of our funniest memories seem to come from missed turns and off the gps plan
Kevin
Well the people spoke, uber/transit it is! Thanks for the help and tips! Will be def looking into your suggestions!

We always rent a car AND use lyft...depends what we're doing. One of my favorite things when I travel anywhere is to get into the car and just drive. That's the best way to find the hidden gems !!! We get ourselves lost all the time and REALLY get to know a place... but if we're going somewhere with a parking fee or something and it was for the day and not here there everywhere we would lyft for that....and it's been my experience Lyft over uber

To Rent or Not to Rent: Getting Around San Diego with a 12-Year-Old
Hey there, fellow travelers! Heading to San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood for the first time with a 12-year-old is an exciting adventure. The question of whether to rent a car or rely on ride-sharing services like Uber is a common dilemma for visitors. Let's dive into the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.
The Car Rental Debate
Renting a car in San Diego can be convenient, especially if you plan to explore areas outside the city center. It provides flexibility and allows you to move at your own pace. However, parking in downtown San Diego and Little Italy can be a challenge and costly, with limited street parking and pricey lots or garages.
The Uber Alternative
On the other hand, using Uber or other ride-sharing services can be a stress-free option. You won't have to worry about navigating unfamiliar streets, finding parking spots, or paying for expensive lots. Additionally, it can be more cost-effective if you plan to stay primarily within the downtown area and Little Italy.
Must-Do Activities in San Diego with a 12-Year-Old
Regardless of your transportation choice, San Diego offers a wealth of family-friendly activities that will create lasting memories for you and your 12-year-old:
- Balboa Park: Explore this cultural hub with museums, gardens, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
- Coronado Beach: Soak up the sun and enjoy the stunning views at this iconic beach.
- USS Midway Museum: Step aboard this historic aircraft carrier and learn about naval aviation.
- Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Immerse yourself in the city's rich history and vibrant Mexican culture.
- Belmont Park: Ride the iconic Giant Dipper roller coaster and enjoy classic amusement park fun.
Remember, San Diego's mild climate and pedestrian-friendly areas make it easy to explore on foot or by renting bicycles or electric scooters.
No matter your transportation choice, San Diego promises an unforgettable adventure for you and your 12-year-old. Embrace the laid-back SoCal vibe, create cherished memories, and have a fantastic time!

Hey fellow travelers, will be heading to San Diego soon and will be staying in the Little Italy neighborhood (close to DT)
Was wondering if I should rent a car to get around or just uber my way around (due to parking issues or other inconveniences)
Also any must do's while down there? Travelling with a 12 year old, first time for both of us.
Thanks in advance, and happy Friday!!!
