Unless you have a Russian friend who would guide you, depending on where you live, use an agency service. If you have the air tickets to/from Russia already, it will help. Otherwise, I believe they may require some confirmation of the accommodation for the time you'll be in Russia. The easiest way is to book some hostel for that period and then cancel it after you'll get the Visa.

Agencies do transport and hotel. After applying for visa. $$. Big money you need to have hotel and transfers prepaid. We do bullet train from Helsinki to st Petersburg. On the train they checked all out documents to ensure we had valid visa and also accommodation. They were angered when we didn’t know exactly what type of vehicle. We said bus or car and that was not what they wanted. Just keep short answers lol. They had no sense of ha ha coming or going.

We (Canadians) booked the train trip thru Real Russia out of Great Britain. They booked all hotels along the way which helped immensely when applying for Russian Visas through a Visa Agency - it still took over a month.

Tips on Getting a Russian Visa

Planning a trip to Russia? One of the first things you'll need to do is get a visa. The Russian visa process can be a bit daunting, but it's definitely doable with a little planning.

Here are a few tips to help you get your Russian visa:

  1. Start the process early. The Russian visa process can take several weeks, so it's important to start the process as early as possible.
  2. Gather the required documents. You'll need to provide a number of documents when you apply for a Russian visa, including your passport, a visa application form, a photo, and proof of travel insurance.
  3. Choose the right type of visa. There are different types of Russian visas available, so it's important to choose the one that's right for your trip. If you're planning on staying in Russia for less than 90 days, you'll need to apply for a tourist visa.
  4. Apply through a travel agent or the Russian embassy. You can apply for a Russian visa through a travel agent or directly through the Russian embassy. If you apply through a travel agent, they will handle the paperwork for you, but you will likely pay a higher fee. If you apply directly through the embassy, you will need to submit your application in person.
  5. Be prepared for an interview. When you apply for a Russian visa, you may be required to attend an interview at the embassy. The interview is an opportunity for the embassy to verify your identity and to ensure that you meet the requirements for a visa.

Getting a Russian visa can be a bit of a hassle, but it's definitely possible with a little planning. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of getting your visa approved.
