That's basically dependent on if you're staying in the same location at night or not.

if you're young and fit, take a pack. If you're older, take the 4 wheeler.

I would definitely prefer a backpack in Japan too! The only time I take a suitcase is if I'm staying in a hotel and bringing lots of nicer clothes.

Suitcase vs Travel Backpack: Which One Should You Choose for Japan?
Suitcase vs Travel Backpack: Which One Should You Choose for Japan?
Japan is a fascinating destination with a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Whether you're exploring bustling cities like Tokyo or venturing into the serene countryside, choosing the right luggage can make a significant difference in your travel experience.
The Case for a 4 Wheeler Suitcase
A 4 wheeler suitcase is a popular choice for many travelers due to its convenience and maneuverability. Here are some advantages of using a suitcase in Japan:
- Smooth Mobility: Japan is known for its efficient public transportation system, including trains, subways, and buses. A suitcase with wheels can easily be rolled through stations, platforms, and streets, making it easier to navigate crowded areas.
- Organized Packing: Suitcases offer compartments and pockets, allowing you to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible. This can be particularly helpful when you need to quickly access items during transit or hotel check-in.
- Durable Construction: High-quality suitcases are designed to withstand the rigors of travel, protecting your belongings from potential damage or wear and tear.
The Advantages of a Travel Backpack
While suitcases have their merits, travel backpacks offer a different set of advantages that may better suit your needs in Japan:
- Hands-Free Mobility: Japan is known for its narrow streets, crowded areas, and stairs in some locations. A backpack allows you to navigate these spaces more easily, keeping your hands free for other tasks or carrying additional items.
- Versatility: Backpacks are versatile and can be used for day trips, hiking, or even overnight stays. This flexibility can be particularly useful when exploring Japan's diverse landscapes and cultural attractions.
- Compact Size: Many accommodations in Japan, especially traditional ryokans or smaller hotels, may have limited space. A backpack can be more compact and easier to store in tight quarters.
Ultimately, the choice between a 4 wheeler suitcase and a travel backpack will depend on your personal preferences, travel style, and the specific itinerary you have planned for your Japan trip. Consider the types of activities you'll be engaging in, the mode of transportation you'll be using, and the level of mobility you require.
Tips for Choosing the Right Luggage
Here are some additional tips to help you make an informed decision:
- If you plan to rely heavily on public transportation and walk a lot, a backpack may be the better option.
- If you prefer a more organized packing system and plan to stay in larger hotels or cities, a suitcase could be more suitable.
- Consider the weight and size of your luggage, as Japan's efficient transportation systems often have luggage restrictions.
- For longer trips or if you plan to shop extensively, a suitcase may provide more packing space.
