Should I spend a night at a hotel by the airport or ferry terminal in Belize City?

Belize: looking for travel tips: Arriving at 3:00pm in Belize City. Planning on going to San Pedro or Caye Caulker island. Last ferry is 4:30pm. With clearing customs and the taxi ride I don’t think I will make it. I was looking at flights, those may be tight as well. Wondering if I should spend 1 night at hotel by airport or ferry terminal? * any other travel tips are appreciated, solo traveler, leaving this week.

Stay at the best hotel in Belize City. It's not great but it's safest. Don't stay near the ferries.
When we've gone to Belize, we fly to Cancun, bus to Chetumal then take the boat.

Just remember Belize is a third world country. Definitely stay at a high star hotel. We have gone 3 times and get out of Belize City quickly.

Cindy would you know if 2 hours would be enough time to land, clear customs and get to the ferry/boat dock?

Adrienne it should be. However, you’re at the mercy of the airport arrivals. Arrival is a small area and if more than one plane arrives around same time, line ups can be about 1.5-2 hours.

Any experience with flying and then going straight to the ferry? The flight lands at 3:00pm and there is a water taxi that leaves at 5:30pm. Will I make it?

Have you checked flights out of the domestic airport? I found it cheaper to fly instead of ferry. Taxi from international airport to domestic. Maybe they will have a flight that is better for timing.

Sharmain I am looking into that option, thank-you

The view from the flight to the islands is amazing. I'd highly recommend it! Considering all of the flight problems and delays over the past few months, if I were you I'd just plan to go the next day.

In Belize at the moment.
We arrived at 3:00pm and booked at pick up shuttle with Belize express and then the last ferry to caye calker is 5:30pm. I had booked the 5:30, but we made the 4:30pm. If you can, the plane is a good choice for one direction. Where are you staying on Ambergris caye? The sargassum (seaweed) has taken over the beach and swimming is not possible at the moment. Caye calker was ok.
Any questions just ask

The entire east coast of Ambergris Caye looks like this or worse. Just a heads up

This picture is at Secret Beach, so as you can see the West Coast is much nicer. Depending on what your activities will include, this may determine where you decide to stay. All snorkel/dive trips get out far enough past the “Sargasm seaweed” and are not an issue. Beaches are just not useable unfortunately.

Travel Tips for Belize

Arriving in Belize City at 3:00pm and planning on going to San Pedro or Caye Caulker island? Here are some tips to help you make the most of your trip:

1. Consider Spending a Night Near the Airport or Ferry Terminal

Since the last ferry to the islands leaves at 4:30pm and you may not make it in time, it might be a good idea to spend a night at a hotel near the airport or ferry terminal. This will give you a chance to relax and start fresh in the morning.

2. Book a Flight to the Islands

If you're worried about missing the last ferry, consider booking a flight to San Pedro or Caye Caulker. While it may be tight, it could be a more reliable option than trying to catch the ferry.

3. Other Travel Tips

As a solo traveler, it's important to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings. Make sure to keep your belongings secure and be cautious when exploring unfamiliar areas. Additionally, be sure to try some of the local cuisine and take in the beautiful sights Belize has to offer.

Enjoy your trip to Belize!
