Are Edmonton Airports Experiencing the Same Security Delays as Other Canadian Airports?

I would be there two hours early. I flew out June 19th and it was about a 25min wait for security. I flew biz class so fortunately I didn’t have a wait.

My daughter's flight from Edmonton to Toronto was completely cancelled. From what the agents on the phone said(and from what I overheard at the airport), the delays / cancellations are due to the airport not having enough staff to provide ground crews for the flights. The worst airports are in Ontario.
I should also note my daughter got through security in Edmonton on an overnight flight in like 10 minutes. No delays.
Sara
Melua oh wonderful flying home to edmonton from toronto with a 9 month old at the end of July

I should also note my daughter got through security in Edmonton on an overnight flight in like 10 minutes. No delays.

Edmonton isn’t too bad compared to major airports. I’d aim to be there 1.5-2 hours ahead.

We flew out last Monday and it was fine. We came back via YYZ and cleared customs in about five minutes. Going to get a lottery ticket today lol

Unrelated to the recent airport problems across Canada, just keep in mind that Monday morning is usually busy at YEG due to commuter flights.
Sara
Usually I have pretty good luck in at YEG (mind you I usually get there 2-3 hours before as a just in case I also travel to the US, connection in Canada usually).
I flew out of Edmonton to Atlanta (connection in Calgary) June 22nd (9pm flight arrived at 6pm) probably got through security in about 15-20mins. Flight was delayed about 30-45mins. I’ve noticed a lot more delayed domestic flights recently. Also flew out back in April 15? (Connection in Toronto) For an AM flight and again about 15-20mins through security.

It flew couple weeks ago not bad at Yeg.
Same for Yyz… there was no line .. weird
Jamie
I took a 7:30am flight on june 24th to montreal and the line for security was quite long actually. I got lucky to be chosen as part of a special screening and got put in the front of the line. I would say go 2-3 hrs before like everyone else suggested.
Janet
The CATSA website shows security wait times for Canadian airports.

If you can, check in on line so you only have to do bag drop. westjet lines are crazy at YEG, no one can get through on the phone, so checkin staff are dealing with that and they are already short staffed. Last Saturday every agent, except 1, was on the phone dealing with passenger issues. Took my son forever to get checked in. Security was fast though.

We’re flying westjet YEG to Kelowna direct in a week or so. Should we be cramming everything into carryons or are we okay to check our bags? I’m hoping the luggage nightmares aren’t happening here or Kelowna?
Santi
Sharonthe problem in YEG is dropping the checked bag off at the counter, might now make it. They won’t get lost, but if you can cram lol
Lauren
2 hours is fine. I’ve flown out of YEG twice this month and no more than a 5 minute wait through security. Check in assistance was longer but we had our dog. Otherwise it would have been no time at all
Nicole
I just flew out yesterday and it was an absolute gong show from checking in to going through security. It took forever. Go early is my advice.
Jen
I flew through Toronto to Chicago a couple weeks ago - never had a problem with security or customs . But long waits at any air canada desk and delayed/cancelled flights and connections .If you can check in online and take carry on you should be golden
Kathleen
Breezed right through security on the may long weekend.
Karen
All I can say is Good Luck. I travelled from Montreal to Edmonton the middle of June, my flight was delayed, I dreading of arriving in at 10:55 pm, I got in at 2:30 am
Paylig
Give yourself a lot of extra time if leaving from Montreal or especially Toronto.
Tracy
I just got back from BC. The EIA was running very smoothly when I was there. Walked right up and checked in in 5 minutes.

I've been flying a lot domestically and internationally the past couple months. Edmonton is fine but always allow yourself room for error. Calgary same situation. Toronto was slow getting luggage once and the second time flight delays to get out. I've flown on weekends and weekdays. No difference in that aspect. Toronto is experiencing staff shortages at the airport resulting in flight delays. The small issue at EIA was a power outage that lasted 15 minutes this weekend.
Mihaela
Edmonton is fine, I flew out a week ago, so fast and not busy
Dean
I have had no issues in Edmonton the past month.

Flew a few weeks ago. No delays getting through security. Dropping off my bags took quite a long while though. Long lineup for that.
Alice
Flew to Vancouver on Friday morning. No problem but checked in on line and had only carry on. From hotel to gate 35 mins.
Laura
I booked a trip to NL in March, from YEG connecting thru YYZ AC flight 160. I got nervous last week and rescheduled my flight to connect thru YUL instead AC328. Then I really got scared and canceled the trip. AC328 was canceled by air canada 8 hours before departure and AC160 was canceled 12 hours before departure. I sincerely hope your flight is a go.

I flew Edmonton to Montreal with air canada last Monday, I was on the noon flight. I only took carry on so was already checked in and only needed to go through security. Security wasn’t bad at all, but I got there 2 hours early, so 10am.
Justin
Flown to Edmonton a handful of times the last month. One was a weekend, the other a week day. No issues at aĺl
Kelly
I flew from Edmonton to NYC on Friday. No problem until 2 hour wait in Toronto but that was because of short staffing at LaGuardia Airport.
Andrea
Hey everybody! Thank you all for the tips! Flew out and made it to Mtl! No issues.
Security at Edmonton ran so smoothly (around 5:45 am). There were a lot of people but EIA had all stations open, so it was a steady/moving line.
I only had carry-on, but it looked like the check /bag drop off areas for the airlines were pretty busy at 5:45 in the morning.
All the best to those traveling!

Had zero issues in Edmonton or Montreal

Toronto (YYZ) has had about an 85-90% market share of Canada's airport issues. Vancouver (YVR) is a distant second. Other Canadian airports haven't really been that bad for lines & security. Even at YYZ it's luck of the draw. In the YYZ Facebook group it feels like I'm seeing less reports of long lines than were reported last month, and more people reporting that they were surprised things went smoothly. But have seen more complaints recently of lost luggage and delayed/cancelled flights (not just in Canada but throughout North America and Europe). These issues are related to lack of staffing.

Security Delays at Edmonton International Airport
If you're scheduled for a 7:30 AM flight from Edmonton International Airport (YEG) to Montreal on Monday, you might be wondering about the security situation and potential delays. While there have been reports of security delays at various airports throughout Canada, the situation at YEG seems to be relatively manageable.
Current Security Wait Times
According to the latest updates from the Edmonton International Airport, the current security wait times are as follows:
- Domestic Departures: 15-20 minutes
- U.S. Departures: 20-25 minutes
- International Departures: 25-30 minutes
These wait times are subject to change, especially during peak travel periods, but they provide a general idea of what to expect.
Tips for Smooth Security Screening
To ensure a smooth security screening experience and minimize potential delays, here are some tips:
- Arrive Early: It's always a good idea to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare, especially for an early morning flight like yours. Aim to be at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure time.
- Check In Online: If you haven't already, check in for your flight online and print your boarding pass. This will save you time at the airport.
- Prepare for Screening: Have your boarding pass and government-issued ID readily available. Remove any prohibited items from your carry-on bags and have your liquids, aerosols, and gels in a separate, clear, resealable bag.
- Dress for Ease: Wear easy-to-remove shoes and avoid excessive jewelry or clothing with metal accents, as these may need to be removed during screening.
- Follow Instructions: Listen carefully to the instructions provided by security personnel and cooperate fully with the screening process.
By following these tips and staying informed about the latest updates from the airport, you can help ensure a smooth and efficient security screening experience at Edmonton International Airport.

I have a 730am flight to Montreal on Monday. I have been hearing there are security delays at various airports throughout Canada. Is this the same for Edmonton?
