Hakone vs. Kawaguchiko: Where Should You Go for Japan's Cherry Blossom Season?

Question:

Hello all - my husband and I will be in Japan at the end of March/beginning of April for cherry blossom season. We generally have our itinerary mapped out (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima/Miyajima), with one exception - for our last "stop" (slotted in for one day in our itinerary before heading back to Tokyo), our choices are: (i) Hakone or, (ii) Kawaguchiko. Anyone been to either or both? Anyone have a strong preference for one over the other, and why?

I know it's not one of ur choices but if u have a rail pass, himeji castle is only 30mins from Shin-Osaka and I was there at cherry blossom season this year and it was beautiful. I didn't go inside the castle, just went around for an hour at most. If u time it u can catch the hello kitty shinkansen on the way back from miyajima to Shin-Osaka and stop over there

Hakone vs Kawaguchiko: Which One to Visit During Cherry Blossom Season?

If you're planning a trip to Japan during the cherry blossom season, you're in for a treat! The sight of the delicate pink blossoms against the backdrop of traditional architecture and natural scenery is truly breathtaking. As you mentioned, your itinerary covers some of Japan's most iconic destinations, but the choice between Hakone and Kawaguchiko for your last stop is a tough one.

Hakone: A Scenic Mountainous Region

Hakone is a popular destination located in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, known for its hot springs, stunning mountain scenery, and views of Mount Fuji (weather permitting). During the cherry blossom season, Hakone offers a unique experience with its many cherry blossom-lined trails and parks.

One of the highlights of visiting Hakone during this time is the opportunity to take a scenic cruise on Lake Ashi, where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms framing the picturesque lake and the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. Additionally, the Hakone Open-Air Museum, with its impressive outdoor sculptures set against the blooming cherry trees, is a must-visit.

Kawaguchiko: The Best Views of Mount Fuji

Kawaguchiko, on the other hand, is a town located in the northwestern part of the Fuji Five Lakes region, offering some of the best views of Mount Fuji. During the cherry blossom season, the area transforms into a pink paradise, with cherry trees lining the streets and parks.

One of the most popular spots in Kawaguchiko during this time is the Chureito Pagoda, which offers a stunning view of Mount Fuji framed by cherry blossoms in the foreground. The Kawaguchiko Music Forest, with its cherry blossom-lined paths and beautiful outdoor concerts, is another highlight.

Which One to Choose?

Both Hakone and Kawaguchiko offer unique and beautiful experiences during the cherry blossom season, but the decision ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and interests.

If you're more drawn to traditional hot spring towns, scenic mountain landscapes, and a range of outdoor activities, Hakone might be the better choice. However, if your primary goal is to capture the iconic view of Mount Fuji against the backdrop of cherry blossoms, Kawaguchiko should be your pick.

Whichever destination you choose, you're sure to create lasting memories and experience the magical beauty of Japan's cherry blossom season.
