I've been using tripadvisor as my primary research tool for many years but still like getting personal recommendations (especially in this price range since it can be pretty hit and miss).

I went July 2012, so a few years ago now, but stayed at Augusta Lucilla Palace in Rome, Desiree Hotel in Florence. Loved both of them- great lcoation next to the rail and transit, and central to a lot of the sights!

I stayed in this flat for a month in Florence, it's a great location close to the centre of the city and walking distance to most things. We didn't have a car and we were fine. The host is very welcoming too. At $109/night I highly recommend it! https://airbnb.com/rooms/52545?s=8

Thanks ladies! I'll be traveling between the cities by train and doing day trips to Naples and Siena so anything that's 10-15mins walking distance to the train station is great.

My sister and I just came from Italy and stayed in hostels the whole time, double check but I think our hostel just outside of monterosso had private rooms, super cheap and Francesco (the owner) cooks the BEST Italian dinner and dessert every night - 5 terre hostels.

Train station definitely walkable from that apartment, did it a few times too.

The Art Boutique Hotel Adriano in Rome is perfectly located. Taxi from the airport and walked everywhere for a week. We paid $130/night with full (delicious, hot, breakfast). Room is on the small side but giving how much time you spend there, it's fine. I would give this ?????
PS, I booked through Expedia.ca

While in Rome, book the viator all day tour of the Vatican. We had five people on our tour and felt like a private tour with very professional and knowledgable guides.

The Roman Guy offered the best tours - by a huge margin. We used this company in Rome and Venice. Take the golf cart tour in Rome. viator was okay so long as you don't go in a group larger than 5. Don't be afraid to stay just outside of Venice to save money on airbnb. The train system is very efficient to get you into the water taxi hub. Also, we used airbnb for all the places you mentioned (4 people/ night) and stayed in affordable and amazing homes.

I absolutely loved Venice (didn't see any other parts of Italy). We stayed in a lovely B&B. The host was wonderfully helpful. It is a bit hard to find but is in the heart of the city - B&B Aquavenice. It is on Bookings.com but is a 9.5 so books up quickly.

Rome: A&C Much More (yeah, kind of an odd name) Very clean, affordable and included breakfast delivered to our room and served with cloth linens and silver tea service. I loved it!

... And very close to Termini Station!
