Looking for Recommendations on Activities in New Orleans. Any Suggestions?

Heading to New Orleans. Which area of New Orleans should we be booking our hotel? I will not be there during Mardi Gras.
Also any other recommendations on activities, restaurants and sites to visit.

Preservation Hall for a very cool jazz experience, Boat cruise up the Mississippi River, ride the street cars though the Garden District...these are just a few things that we did when there a few years ago. Stayed at the Hilton close to the river.
