Any. All depends where you go. If you go to touristics places (cancun, mayan riviera, puerto vallarta, los cabos, etc ) you can pay with either pesos or usd. If you visit any other place pesos will be the best option.

a word of caution to anyone travelling to mexico, avoid free standing atms, major corruption involving wireless skimmers stealing your pin. stick to atms at major banks. there is a lot of info online regarding this.

What will be a regular tip in pesos? How much required for a full week at an all inclusive just for tips? Any idea?

Profile picture of Michael

Michael

Individual level ...5 pesos is a bit cheap... 10 pesos is decent ( for a good taxi ride and price ) ... Above that you're getting generous ... Which there is a time and place for. Tip early, tip good ... Especially at an all inclusive ... Make friends of the staff early

Profile picture of Kevin

We usually tip 20 pesos, perhaps we are a bit more gratuitous, but we are well remembered and 20 pesos converts to about $1.60 CAD really not all that much. These workers really deserve it and they genuinely appreciate it

USD.... I was just there last week, they all assume you do not know the price of a Peso so they make it higher...... Even if you tell them you know what it is worth they tell you they use a different exchange rate.

Profile picture of Michael

Michael

They tell you ??? First time in Mexico ? Why would you expose yourself to paying exchange twice ???

Profile picture of Jason

Jason

No need for the crack, and no not my first time..... I did not mean I had them exchange it for me. I meant they said 10.00 US or XXX Pesos to buy something. I would say I had Pesos but that sounded high and then be told "Well we exchange at 16.00 per" or whatever they said.

When we first went to PDC in the nineties ... It was much smaller and ... Friendlier. I remember buying fruit from a stand by the bat tree ...and having no concept of their money ... I held out my pesos in my hand and the lady picked out what was due. There are still places like ... But few and far between. Even though it's more like play money than ours ... You have to learn the money and using 3 different currency isn't a great idea at the best of times .

Just got back yesterday... Get a few hundred pesos before you leave Canada for the first day tips (e.g. transfer, baggage person, drinks etc.). Next day, go to a major bank (Banamex, Scotiabank) and use the ATM to get more money. Better exchange rate than in Canada. I only paid $3.00 CDN per transaction - got 3,000 peso at a time. Mexican nationales appreciate pesos & you will get better deals - they lose when having to exchange foreign currency.

Michael

You cannot beat Scotiabank ... Easiest way to go

Profile picture of Cheryl

Banamex is more prevelant in PV than Scotiabank. Cabo - Scotiabank all the way.

Profile picture of Michael

I had no luck finding Scotiabank anywhere on the left side of Mexico ...

Profile picture of Cheryl

Yup. Banamex is the big one that way. Has always worked for me - great rates - small fee.

Download the XE app to your phone before you go - works offline & is a big help in converting Cdn$ to Pesos so you know how much you are actually paying for things.

most Cambios (currency traders) have the exchange rates posted in the window, you can keep up that way and have an idea what the official rate is. Exchange is always negotiable as is everything, if you dont like the rate they offer call them on it and state what you will pay, if you dont like the rate then walk. One of teh best things I ever learned for dealing with aggressive/ overly persistent vendors is "gracias senora or appropriate title), no necessito, yo tengo".... thank you ma'am, I dont need, I have...... accompanying this with an open hand up palm out "stop"gesture will make it official and be understood, speak calmly and quietly and you will generally be left alone........

Pesos or USD for Mexico Trip?

If you're heading to Mexico this Sunday, you might be wondering whether to carry pesos or US dollars. The short answer is: both!

The Importance of Having Pesos

While USD is widely accepted in tourist areas, having Mexican pesos on hand is essential for everyday transactions. Pesos are the official currency of Mexico, and using them will make your life much easier when paying for things like local transportation, street food, and small souvenirs. Plus, it's a courtesy to use the local currency whenever possible.

When to Use USD

That being said, US dollars are still handy in certain situations. Many hotels, resorts, and high-end restaurants will accept USD, and it's often easier to exchange larger amounts of money at a better rate. However, be aware that some places may give you a less favorable exchange rate or charge a fee for using USD.

Tips for Handling Currency

  • Withdraw pesos from an ATM in Mexico for the best exchange rate.
  • Carry a mix of small and large denominations in both pesos and USD.
  • Avoid changing money on the street or with unlicensed vendors.
  • Check online for the current exchange rate before your trip.

Remember, having both pesos and USD on hand will give you the flexibility to navigate different situations and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip to Mexico. Safe travels!
