Looking on feedback on the following resorts for a friend. They are trying to decide on which one so any opinions, experiences, etc would be awesome. They haven't been to any of these and are a bit of Mexico virgins so looking for something that's fun, close to Cancun.
- Riu Dunamar, Playa Mujeres
- Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres
- Riu Playacar, Riveria Maya… See more

Lisa So good to hear! I'm staying at the Hilton next week. What are the rooms like? I have the ocean view but thinking of upgrading to swim up or ocean front....any suggestions? Sorry for robbing your post Bonnie Roper

Kristene you will LOVE it. We booked ocean view for February but I’m going to try to upgrade. Can’t beat ocean front.

Kristene some people love the swim up but I like being on the top floor and looking out to the ocean. But honestly no bad room. I can’t wait to go back!

Oh wow that looks amazing! I would rather that view than a swim up. Is that the Jr Suite Ocean view or Ocean Front? I want it lol

Thanks so much for all this info. It’s my first time to Mexico so this is wonderful help. I asked to join and I’ll definitely update on the trip

Kristene please do! Well for your first time in Mexico you chose your resort well. Go up and down both sides of 5th ave (out the main doors to the right abt 1/2 block). Definitely go to caravan. It’s my fav store.
And if you run into victor at the resort (he’s the head of recreation) tell him I say hi. And be sure to frequent the coffee shop. They’re amazing in there and have lots of baked goodies. You can pm me if you have more questions. Oh and Canada transfers if you need transportation from the airport. They have vans with Canadian flags. Makes it easy to find at the airport lol

I would also suggest you consider the Barcelo complex as well as the Iberostar. Tons to do many restaurants, lazy rivers, wave pools etc, nighttime entertainment etc. I didn't like Dreams tulum, or the Grand Bahia chain ( there's definitely better resorts than those 2)

Jen couldn’t agree with you more..Riu have had guests killed on their properties..my girlfriend and hubby were there when it happened and never made the papers..the resorts hide this ad it would harm their business..I would never stay at a Riu resort..Iberostar and Barcelo we have stayed at both and both are amazing resorts!!

My wife and I have traveled extensively to Mayan Riviera which included some very pricey hotels. Even so, Catalonia Royal Tulum is one we still talk about.
It's been a while but here are the things that made it great:
- They, by far, have one of the best beaches (once you go a bit left of the main exit to the beach)
- Their entertainment team is really fun and there are tons of activities you can do
- We got to release baby turtles into the ocean with conservation officers (season dependent)
- Location of the hotel is pretty good and we also went to Xplor, which made the trip great. If your friends decide to book, make sure they do so well in advance online because it's cheaper that way.
Catalonia was a fun stay if you are not too fussy about average food and rooms that are nothing spectacular.
Honorable mention would be Valentin Imperial Maya but you will pay way more per night. Valentin is kind of like being in Mexico but eating Miami food and enjoying Canada/US hotel comfort of a 5 star hotel. They have fancy options so make sure to bring a collared shirt because some restaurants will not accept men otherwise no matter how dressed up you are
In Cancun, Sun Palace is the place that is similar to Valentin but I am unsure what your friend's budget is.
