We flew into San Jose and booked a river rafting trip as transport.... The picked us and our bags up in San Jose... Drove to drop point, fed us breakfast....
At this point, some left for totuguero, and we went river rafting for 4 hours. They fed us lunch, then continued on to the Caribbean coast with drops along the way. It was a great way to spend our first day.

We used Caribe shuttle last October with no issues. we used them to get from bocas del toro in Panama to Liberia. We stopped on the east coast for a few hours then La Fortuna for the night. They were on time for pick up, etc however they drive like a bat out of hell to make to each stop/transfer.

Tracey ok thanks! Glad to know they were ok. We decided to head to Tortuguerro via caribe shuttle, then onward to cahuita and cocles.

Monica just wear your seatbelt if on any curves and don't be hungover...lol

We flew into San Jose and then took a van to Cahuita. I believe it took about 5 ish hours?
Monica
Ashley we are also heading to Cahuita. Aside from the National Park there, were there any other highlights that really stood out for you , that you recall?
Ashley
Monica it’s a beautiful little spot. We spent one week in cahuita and one week in punts uva (we had our 10 month old with us) so we were taking it really slow. We did a chocolate tour, which was amazing, and just spent lots of time exploring beaches and biking around. Lots of good food!
Monica
Ashley that sounds pretty perfect! It will be just the break were looking for, especially after lots of adventure in Tortuguerro. Great that you travel with your little one. A perfect way to be brought up, in my opinion.

Getting Around Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast
You're planning a trip to Costa Rica's Caribbean coast in mid-October, and you're wondering about the best way to get around. You're flying into San Jose, and you can't decide whether to head to Tortuguero first or travel further southeast first.
Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of each option:
Option 1: Head to Tortuguero First
- Pros: Tortuguero is a remote and beautiful destination that's home to a wide variety of wildlife. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the Caribbean Sea.
- Cons: Getting to Tortuguero can be a bit of a challenge. You'll need to take a boat or a plane from San Jose, and the journey can take several hours.
Option 2: Travel Further Southeast First
- Pros: There are several popular destinations on the Caribbean coast that are easier to get to than Tortuguero. These include Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and Manzanillo.
- Cons: These destinations are more developed than Tortuguero, so they may not be as peaceful or secluded.
Which Option Is Right for You?
The best way to decide which option is right for you is to consider your interests and preferences. If you're looking for a remote and peaceful destination, then Tortuguero is a great choice. However, if you're looking for a more accessible destination with more amenities, then you may want to consider traveling further southeast first.
Here are some additional tips for getting around Costa Rica's Caribbean coast:
- Book your transportation in advance, especially if you're traveling during peak season.
- Be prepared for delays, especially if you're traveling by boat.
- Bring plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen.
- Be respectful of the local culture and environment.
With a little planning, you can easily get around Costa Rica's Caribbean coast and enjoy all that it has to offer.
