We stayed in Manarola and loved it. It was the perfect size, highly recommended. Spent time in Florence and Montepulciano too and both were beautiful. If you decide you're into that I can send you the info for our specific accommodations.

Here is where we stayed in Manarola. We took the room without a terrace to save money and regretted it the whole time. Get any other room. Nice, clean, simple. Amazing views and location.

Pei, for what it's worth I'm not a hiker, but my husband is. He did a lot of hiking when we stayed in Manarola, headed north and his photos are incredible. He hiked all the way past Corniglia where I took the train to meet him. The town the most northern is super touristy (montorossa al mare), worth a day trip but I wouldn't stay there. Then we took the train back to the last town Riomaggiore and walked back home on the nicely paved path. Manarola at night is gorgeous, and quiet. With one pub that had live music when we were there.

I also stayed in Manarola and loved our choice. If you need specifics please pm me. Check which trails are open before you go. They are often closed due to maintenance / landslides. This past summer, most were closed but we did the hike between Corniglia and Vernazza. Have a great time, Cinque Terre is spectacular!

I stayed in Riomaggiore a few years ago and I thought it was a beautiful and charming place. It would have been convenient to get to except there was a train strike which affected only certain trains and lines. I took a different the train from Rome to Pisa to La Spezia and then to Riomaggiore.

You should probably research and see if the hiking trails are even open! We went a couple of years ago and only trail open was Vernazza to Monterosso! It was Beautiful! We ended up hiking a lot of small paths above the towns instead!

We are going in sept. Opted to stay in monterroso. Can drive to it and also somewhere to go out at night. Lots of hiking from there.
