Big Island, Kona side....amazing....dry but tropical, still has that 'aloha' feel with Kailua village. Hilo side is much more tropical but very, very wet.

I have been to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hilo. Oahu is very busy and crowded. I loved the slow pace and beauty of Kauai and Hilo the best. Maui is amazing too so if I had to pick from the two, I'd say Maui. Aloha! Enjoy your time in paradise.

If you want night life go to Oahu, if you want relaxation go to Maui. Maui has amazing snorkeling off of most beaches.

Oahu is NOT just Waikiki, which is why everyone is telling you to not got to Oahu. That would be like saying you shouldn't go to BC because of Vancouver. Oahu is incredible, once you get away from wakiki/Honolulu. The north shore has an amazing laid back vibe. Check out Mokuleia, close enough to Haleiwa for amenities but miles away from everyone.

Also on north shore you can rent kayaks in a marina where it is very calm. 15 minute paddle and you are in a river with dozens of large sea turtles. Very cool and safe

Waikiki and Oahu, for me - Maui for older folks [I am61 LOL] - so easy to get around on the Bus, and Melissa is right on point, so much more than just the bustling Waikiki...have been hundreds of times, would go back tot he big island or Kauai but only for a few days, then back to Oahu.

Oahu is more commercial. There are excellent tourist places like the Dole farm, Polynesian centre, Hamama Bay, and the north shore.
Maui is more authentic to Hawaii. Stunning natural sites and beaches but less commercial, smaller scale.

As much as I love Maui, I discovered Ko'olina on Oahu a couple years ago. Quiet, beautiful beaches - turtles in the lagoon. Great restaurants.

If it is your first time then you should go to Oahu! Rent a car and drive the island. See Pearl Harbor. See Diamond Head. The scenes of Hawaii in advertisements and commercials are from Oahu. You don't have to spend each day in Waikiki but it also has it's fun times! There are so many beautiful beaches around the island - Kailua is one. Next time, then do Maui or Kauai.

Oahu or Maui, thoughts?

When it comes to choosing between Oahu and Maui for a vacation, there are a few things to consider. Oahu is the more populated island, with Honolulu being the state capital. As such, Oahu has more to offer in terms of nightlife, shopping, and dining. Maui, on the other hand, is less populated and has a more laid-back atmosphere. It's also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Things to do on Oahu

  • Visit Pearl Harbor
  • Hike to the top of Diamond Head
  • Explore the Polynesian Cultural Center
  • Shop at the Ala Moana Center
  • Attend a luau

Things to do on Maui

  • Visit Haleakala National Park
  • Drive the Road to Hana
  • Go whale watching
  • Visit the Maui Ocean Center
  • Relax on one of Maui's many beautiful beaches

Which island is right for you?

Ultimately, the best way to decide which island is right for you is to consider your interests and travel style. If you're looking for a lively vacation with plenty of things to do, Oahu is a great choice. If you're looking for a more relaxed vacation with beautiful scenery, Maui is a better option.
