5
June
Question:
Humans say...
Bernice
Maui! Much slower.
Nicki
Big Island, Kona side....amazing....dry but tropical, still has that 'aloha' feel with Kailua village. Hilo side is much more tropical but very, very wet.
John
Muai..but you must have a car....but far fewer redneck tourists
Joanne
Both....
Trevor
Been to Maui 3 times and Oahu once, I highly recommend maui
Trevor
Mauiman Randy Wolfe will have the best deals on Maui for condos
Jillian
Maui for sure.
Nancy
I have been to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hilo. Oahu is very busy and crowded. I loved the slow pace and beauty of Kauai and Hilo the best. Maui is amazing too so if I had to pick from the two, I'd say Maui. Aloha! Enjoy your time in paradise.
Bonnie
Maui ... Oahu is Los Angeles with Mai tais...
Laura
If you want night life go to Oahu, if you want relaxation go to Maui. Maui has amazing snorkeling off of most beaches.
Cecilia
Maui! Or Kauai is another beautiful option. Definitely less touristy!
Lori
Maui !!
Melissa
Oahu is NOT just Waikiki, which is why everyone is telling you to not got to Oahu. That would be like saying you shouldn't go to BC because of Vancouver. Oahu is incredible, once you get away from wakiki/Honolulu. The north shore has an amazing laid back vibe. Check out Mokuleia, close enough to Haleiwa for amenities but miles away from everyone.
Jennifer
I couldn't agree more
Billie
me too
April
Same. Oahu was beautiful!
Brad
Also on north shore you can rent kayaks in a marina where it is very calm. 15 minute paddle and you are in a river with dozens of large sea turtles. Very cool and safe
Melissa
Maui is nice too but do your research on both islands. They both have a lot to offer
Joanne
I'm going in a couple of weeks to ko OLina on Oahu it is supposed to be more layed back ...I allways go to waikiki.so it will be a change.
Billie
Waikiki and Oahu, for me - Maui for older folks [I am61 LOL] - so easy to get around on the Bus, and Melissa is right on point, so much more than just the bustling Waikiki...have been hundreds of times, would go back tot he big island or Kauai but only for a few days, then back to Oahu.
Lisa
Maui!!
Karen
maui!
Jeannett
Kauai
Gail
Maui
Rick
Definitely Maui
Darrell
Kihei is by far our fave
Par
Maui. Or both. But do Oahu first.
Allison
Definately Mauii. I'm here now for the Month in Kihei. I love it here. By far my favourite place.
Meagan
Thank you for the input everybody!
Illana
Maui

Oahu is more commercial. There are excellent tourist places like the Dole farm, Polynesian centre, Hamama Bay, and the north shore.
Maui is more authentic to Hawaii. Stunning natural sites and beaches but less commercial, smaller scale.
Diane
As much as I love Maui, I discovered Ko'olina on Oahu a couple years ago. Quiet, beautiful beaches - turtles in the lagoon. Great restaurants.
Jennica
Kauai
Lisa
Maui !
Basia
Maui's quieter, more action on Oahu.
Robi
I was in Maui for the first time in Aug and just loved it.
Kari
yes!
Diane
Ko'olina on Oahu is awesome.
Dave
Don't know if you're a music buff but Mick Fleetwood has a pub on Maui called Fleetwoods and he's known to sit in with the band occasionally and Willie Nelson has a pub there too
Claudett
There is a deal with flight center right now fly for $600 to Oahu & then to Maui
Claudett
Maui is nice quieter but I found after a week we were wanting more action Lahinia front street is awesome but after a week you kinda been there done that. I would suggest a week at each island if can
Stephani
Oahu
Kim
Maui for sure.
Donna
Maui for sure!!
Karen
If it is your first time then you should go to Oahu! Rent a car and drive the island. See Pearl Harbor. See Diamond Head. The scenes of Hawaii in advertisements and commercials are from Oahu. You don't have to spend each day in Waikiki but it also has it's fun times! There are so many beautiful beaches around the island - Kailua is one. Next time, then do Maui or Kauai.

Oahu or Maui, thoughts?
When it comes to choosing between Oahu and Maui for a vacation, there are a few things to consider. Oahu is the more populated island, with Honolulu being the state capital. As such, Oahu has more to offer in terms of nightlife, shopping, and dining. Maui, on the other hand, is less populated and has a more laid-back atmosphere. It's also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Things to do on Oahu
- Visit Pearl Harbor
- Hike to the top of Diamond Head
- Explore the Polynesian Cultural Center
- Shop at the Ala Moana Center
- Attend a luau
Things to do on Maui
- Visit Haleakala National Park
- Drive the Road to Hana
- Go whale watching
- Visit the Maui Ocean Center
- Relax on one of Maui's many beautiful beaches
Which island is right for you?
Ultimately, the best way to decide which island is right for you is to consider your interests and travel style. If you're looking for a lively vacation with plenty of things to do, Oahu is a great choice. If you're looking for a more relaxed vacation with beautiful scenery, Maui is a better option.
