Question:

Singapore trip (4 nights) for business in September. Trying to decide extending by 3 days there, or go to Hong Kong for a 3 day stopover. Travelling solo. Never been to Hong Kong, have been to Singapore (15+ years ago). Thoughts?

Hong Kong can be a bit of a shock if you’re used to clean BC air. It’s pretty disgustingly polluted there. I’d go with Singapore or consider something nicer like the islands of Malaysia (Langkawi) or Thailand. You should be able to get a cheap flight on air Asia from Singapore.

Thanks. I’ve experienced nasty air (and open sewer trenches
) in many places in the past. I’ve been to Malaysia (KL) and Langkawi before as well. I know Singapore is very clean, which is good.

I've been to HK, not Singapore. HK was very blah. I think you should go with Singapore! Dawn is very right, air quality in HK is horrible

curious to know why you might think it's blah, maybe I have to much birthtown pride lol

LOL @Tim. I'm plain spoiled/Born/raised in Vancouver, where we have so much infinite SPACE, clean air, hiking, food etc. Over there, everything felt muted, dingy, dark and dirty? (Dilapidated condo skyscrapers everywhere). People were always in a nonstop rush

Watched a few Singapore documentaries lately- looks far more intriguing

Im born in Hong Kong, just came back from Singapore, depends how much time off you have on your four days in Singapore, you should definitely catch the night show at Marina Bay Sands and eat at the hawker centres for cheap and delicious food. Singapore might be good if you want to spend some time in the jungles where I saw lizard, boar, monkeys, fiddler crabs. Hong Kong has some really breathtaking hikes because it is quite mountainous, the hike up Lugard Road for what is probably the best city skyline panorama view in the world. The food is also top notch, different of course, but I have a feeling it will cost a little more. They will both have the bustle of an Asian metropolis, if you think you might get to see a lot of Singapore within the four days of the business trip, you should check out Hong Kong

Singapore is amazing

You say you’ve been to Singapore before... so my answer is Hong Kong 100%. There is far more to the place than many people think. Perfect for 3-4 days. Nowhere near as sterile as Singapore, and therefore a lot more interesting for a lot of travelers.

I voted HKG because I have been and relatively easy to get around. But, I have not been to Singapore, it could be fun to revisit and compare from yr first trip

If you happen to choose Singapore, book early especially if your business meeting/conferences are on Santosa Island and need to stay closer. But food is good almost anything you choose and the garden in the dome is breathtaking and the electronic mall ofcourse. Not sure about detail, but the self driving cars are on the road and you can ride them to certain destinations already.

Singapore vs. Hong Kong: Solo Travel Decision

Planning a business trip to Singapore for 4 nights in September? That sounds like a fantastic opportunity! But now you're faced with a decision - should you extend your trip in Singapore by 3 days or take a 3-day stopover in Hong Kong? Let's weigh the options.

Extending in Singapore:

Since you've been to Singapore over 15 years ago, extending your stay could be a great chance to rediscover the city-state. You can explore new attractions like Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and Sentosa Island. Singapore is known for its delicious food, vibrant culture, and efficient public transportation system. Plus, you can use this time to network with local businesses or colleagues.

Stopover in Hong Kong:

On the other hand, if you've never been to Hong Kong, a 3-day stopover could be an exciting adventure. Hong Kong is a bustling metropolis known for its skyscrapers, bustling street markets, and delicious dim sum. You can visit iconic landmarks like Victoria Peak, Avenue of Stars, and explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Central and Causeway Bay.

Final Thoughts:

Ultimately, the decision comes down to whether you want to revisit a familiar place or explore a new destination. Both Singapore and Hong Kong offer unique experiences and opportunities for solo travelers. Consider your interests, budget, and travel goals before making a decision. Whichever option you choose, make the most of your trip and enjoy the experience!

Safe travels!
