You really don’t need a car. You can take a transfer to Whistler. It is an absolute waste of money and cars get broken into a lot in Vancouver.
I lived in Vancouver for over 3 years and here are my list of best restaurants:
All of the below need reservations and I recommend booking 2-3 weeks in advance:
-L’abbatoir (great brunch and cocktails…oysters at dinner)
-Published on main
-Elisa (best steak house in Canada. Must do the bean soup. Not kidding)
-Blue water (legendary. Don’t do the seafood tower)
-AnnaLena (mussels and torn bread. This place is probably my fav)
-Pidgin (great food and the owner does so much for the community)
-Ask for Luigi (great pastas)
-Miku (sushi with the best view)
-Botanist (amazing brunch and great cocktails)
-St Lawrence (menus are always delicious. Order the extras and try the martini)
-Kissa tanto (great food. Good bartender and the most beautiful space. Order the truffled omelette)
-Bao bei ( order the omelette. I’m not an egg person but it’s so good. Then go to the keefer bar)
-Masayoshi (super expensive but really amazing. Like what you would get in Japan)
-Sushi by maumi (super expensive but again like you would get in Japan. Don’t be late if you have a reservation)
-cioppino (the ravioli is to die for)
Cheap eats:
Hundy’s hamburgers
DownLow Chicken
Their there
Anh and chi
Lounges:
-Hawksworth
-Pacific Rim lobby lounge (food is good there and sushi is amazing)
-The diamond in Gastown

I forgot to add:
Cheap eats:
-Dibeppe
-Any ramen place. They have good ramen.
-Thierry
-chau express in Granville island
Great food and patio:
Ancora
On the way to Whistler:
Mountain woman fish and chips near the mining museum. It’s a road side stand.
Whistler:
Bearfoot bistro for their nitro ice cream. Incredible. They also have cheap good oysters for happy hour
I would avoid hawksworth (the restaurant) and nightingale. Food went to crap. Restaurants are pretty but he is so shitty with his staff that it’s reflected in how the place has gone down hill. The lounge is good but their great staff have all left for either Elisa or Kissa tanto.

I loved the Capilano Suspension bridge, Stanley Park and Granville Island.

We went ziplining in Whistler with Ziptrek tours, so much fun.
Food-wise, highly recommend Nemesis Coffee, GNW location! Also really enjoyed Moltan in Kitsilano. A bit fancy, but you get what you pay for.
Main St Brewing, Brassneck, tons of breweries by Main St near Mt Pleasant.
We've visited in September and it was still warm in the mid to high 20s, but definitely bring layers.

Wouldn’t bother with rental, parking in Vancouver expensive and parking tickets pricy, take sky train or taxi, uber to downtown

Profile picture of Jessica

Jessica

Agree with the above, you won’t need a rental. The sky train to downtown is super easy and you can get transportation to Whistler from downtown (once you get to Whistler you don’t need a vehicle ). If you do get a rental, don’t leave anything inside within view, not even a hat!

Last September it was about Toronto hot. We had the crazy heat dome end of July and the heat didn’t let up until September. If you like sushi check out Minami or Miku. Bartholomew is a cool bar in Yaletown. Anywhere in Gastown is great but Pourhouse has amazing drinks and so does The Diamond. Local has the best patio in gastown but Tacofino also has a great patio and is a super well known Mexican restaurant group here. If your vegan Heirloom is amazing and Meet is great for casual vegan food. JuiceBar is my fav wine bar in Vancouver, it’s in gastown too.
Definitely go to Spanish Banks in kits or Wreck Beach at UBC (you have to walk up/down like 20k stairs but it’s worth it). The seawall is a must too. The art gallery is great if you like that kind of stuff too.

Don’t bother with a car rental…the Skytrain to from the airport to downtown is SO easy, as is everything else in Vancouver. Also-they use a Compass Card there for transit payment and you can order one ahead and get it sent to you so you already have it before you even get there. I just went to Van last week and took the Canada Line to Yaletown from the airport, then took the bus over to the ferry terminal and went over to the island. It’s SO easy to get around there on transit-having a car is more of an expensive hassle than anything.

Profile picture of David

David

Alyssa I think it is worth it if they're planning on going up to Whistler, though. There's definitely no point in Vancouver, transit is pretty good there, but it really helps to have one for a day if you're headed up the Sea to Sky.

You won’t need a car unless you’re planning to do things outside of the city. My husband and I spent a week there in October without a car. It’s a very walkable city. If you’d like my itinerary PM me. We ate at great restaurants.

Sea to Sky Gondola is great in Squamish. The views are amazing and you can have drinks on the patio at the top. We took guest here every time they came to visit. Have a game plan for what to do is whistler, hikes, gondola etc because it’s not crazy exciting that time of year. The sea to sky highway drive up is beautiful though. Granville island is a must as well.

Douce Diner in North Vancouver for brunch. Phenominal food and cool place.

Agreed for car rental, Vancouver is also pretty walkable with a few direct busses/SkyTrain in between if you get to the neighborhood you can walk around easily. You don't need a compass card, you just tap your credit card.
I'm hereto recommend treats! Go to Purebread (many locations) and Cartems. I love Elysian coffee, but there are so many good coffee shops everywhere. I think these places haven't been recommended yet: Como Taperia, Anh and Chi, Fat Mao noodles, Medina for brunch but very long waits (I think they started taking reservations).
