Worried about delays: Is a 1h7min layover in Seattle too risky for a family of 6?

Question:

Hi! I'm looking at booking a flight that connects in Seattle's airport with a 1h7min connection time. The flights are vancouver-seattle-kona Hawaii. Do you think that is enough time, it'll be me, my husband, my dad and 3 kids aged 3, 4 and 6 travelling. I don't think we will have a lot of carry on, but we will be checking our car seats. I think customs and immigration would be done in Vancouver, so that should cut down the time? I would be terrified of a delay! I tried to look it up and it seems that we land in concourse A and depart out of concourse B.
Thanks for your help!

Yes! Immigration should be done in YVR! Land at A gates will be not too far from B gates. But if delayed out of yvr?

With so much going on and small children I'd probably go an hour earlier if possible. The minimum connection time is possible but is it worth the worry and stress if your flight is delayed by even 10 minutes from YVR?

I did this by myself but there was no problem. The car seats should check through?

Yes, the car seats will check. You're right, that really should be an issue.
Did you find you had enough time to connect? Or did you feel pretty rushed? Thanks!

If they sell you a ticket that has a 1 hour connection time, they consider you can make it in that time. The airlines, as much as you, don't want to have you miss the flight and then have to re-accommodate you.

as long as your entire itinerary is on one file you will be fine

what airline will u be travelling with? if you are delayed they would have to rebook you on next available. since clearing customs in yvr and bags get checked thru shouldnt be a problem if on time.

IF it is delta all the way thru...it should be fine. I have travelled with less connection time.......

seems a bit tight, if you haven't booked yet try a little longer gap between flights - definately book all on one itinerary as Billie suggested - any delays getting out of Vancouver or getting to a gate in Seattle (wrangling 6 people can be tricky at times) could put your connection in jeopardy - if you miss your flight you may not be able to get out for another day and depending on the time of the year finding 6 available seats on another flight might be touch and go - also pay extra and choose your seats in advance as there is no guarantee all 6 will/can be seated together

Look at Alaska Air Bellingham, Seattle, Kona.

I have made plenty 1-1.5 hour layovers in SeaTac. Even when our son was 9 weeks old!

Try to get seats at the front of the plane on the flight to Seattle. Herding kids through the airport won't be quick so take advantage of every minute. Maybe one of the adults can carry kids or bring a stroller and gate check it.

Seattle Airport Connection Time

You're asking if a 1h7min connection time is enough time to make your flight from Vancouver to Kona Hawaii, with a connection in Seattle. You're traveling with your husband, your dad, and three kids aged 3, 4, and 6. You don't think you'll have a lot of carry-on, but you will be checking your car seats. You think customs and immigration will be done in Vancouver, so that should cut down on the time.

Here are some factors to consider when deciding if you have enough time for your connection:

  • The size of the airport
  • The distance between concourses
  • The number of people traveling with you
  • The ages of the children traveling with you
  • The time of day you are traveling
  • The weather conditions

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is a large airport, but it is well-organized and easy to navigate. The distance between concourses A and B is about a 5-minute walk. You will have to go through security again after you land in Seattle, but this should not take more than 10-15 minutes. If you are traveling with a lot of carry-on luggage, you may want to allow for more time.

You are traveling with three young children, which will add some time to your connection. You will need to make sure that they are all able to walk quickly and keep up with you. If you are traveling with a stroller, you will need to factor in the time it will take to fold it up and check it at the gate.

The time of day you are traveling can also affect your connection time. If you are traveling during peak hours, the airport will be more crowded and it may take longer to get through security and to your gate. If you are traveling during off-peak hours, the airport will be less crowded and you should have more time to spare.

The weather conditions can also affect your connection time. If there is bad weather, your flight may be delayed or canceled. This could give you less time to make your connection.

Based on the factors above, I believe that you should have enough time to make your connection. However, I would recommend arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. This will give you plenty of time to check in, go through security, and find your gate. I would also recommend checking the status of your flight before you leave for the airport. This will help you to avoid any surprises.
