I'm originally from Japan. in term of place to stay is depends on price, what and where you want to see n go. I've never taken a tour but hato bus is an option. looks like some Japanese offer free tour guide as well. I'd recommend to check out Tokyo station (gransta, ramen street etc), Asakusa for sure, Metropolitan Government Building observatory in shinjuku, if you like seafood tsukiji market might b a good idea. There r so many places you can go really. try this youtuber (internationally ME) she has uploaded so many tokyo guide that might give you some good ideas. Download an app to navigate train/subway time n map, rent a poket wifi (portable wifi) comes very handy as well. Free metropolice magazine might help you as well for events etc. For inexpensive food definitely convenience stores (7-11, family mart, lawson) you'll be amazed of the quality and variety, street food are great.

it depends on how you'd like to spend the last night. You want to be in tokyo or closer to Narita is important? location wise, you can be in shinjuku, shinagawa, tokyo station, or even Chiba.

so you know narita express only stops at narita, sakura, yotsukaido and chiba st.(after chiba st is at tokyo st) the best bet is to stay at chiba st or narita st. Near chiba st, hotel sunroute or daiwa roynet hotel look good. Narita st is good as well. you can visit naritasan temple.

I stayed in JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku, 2 Chome-6-2 Yoyogi, 渋谷区 Shibuya-ku, Tōkyō-to 151-0053, Japan, very convenient and good price with bigger rooms. My recommendation is try gyukaku motomura. There are many branches in Tokyo

Have the Michelin star ramen! (Go early to get a ticket for a time slot, wander for the day and come back at the designated time) also try some of the themed restaurants they're a lot of fun (like the ninja or monster cafe) but a bit more expensive as you pay for the experience too.

That's interesting! Never thought about themed restaurants. Will try the Michelin star ramen too. Thanks!

Best Areas and Restaurants in Tokyo

Tokyo, the vibrant capital of Japan, offers a unique blend of modern sophistication and traditional charm. With its diverse neighborhoods, world-class dining options, and rich cultural heritage, it's no wonder that this city is a top destination for travelers worldwide. Here are some recommendations for your upcoming trip in May.

Where to Stay

When it comes to finding the perfect area to stay in Tokyo, there are several options to consider:

  • Shinjuku: This bustling district is known for its skyscrapers, neon lights, and vibrant nightlife. It's a great choice for those who want to experience the heart of modern Tokyo. Popular hotels in the area include the Hilton Tokyo and the Keio Plaza Hotel.
  • Asakusa: If you prefer a more traditional and cultural experience, Asakusa is an excellent choice. This historic neighborhood is home to the famous Sensoji Temple and offers a glimpse into old Tokyo with its charming streets and traditional shops. Consider staying at the Richmond Hotel Asakusa or the Asakusa View Hotel.
  • Shibuya: Renowned for its iconic scramble crossing and trendy fashion scene, Shibuya is a popular area for younger travelers. It's also a great base for exploring other parts of the city. The Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel and the Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu are good options in this area.

Restaurants with Reasonable Prices

Tokyo is a culinary paradise, offering a wide range of dining experiences from high-end restaurants to casual eateries. Here are some recommendations for delicious and reasonably priced restaurants:

  • Nabezo (Shinjuku): This popular shabu-shabu (hot pot) restaurant offers high-quality ingredients at affordable prices. The all-you-can-eat option is a great value.
  • Tonki (Asakusa): Enjoy authentic tonkatsu (breaded and fried pork cutlets) at this long-standing establishment. Their set meals, which include sides and miso soup, are a bargain.
  • Gyukatsu Motomura (Shibuya): This casual eatery specializes in gyukatsu, thinly sliced beef cutlets that are fried to perfection. The meals are reasonably priced and delicious.
  • Ramen Jiro (Multiple locations): For a quick and satisfying meal, stop by one of Ramen Jiro's locations for a hearty bowl of ramen. Their tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen is a fan favorite.

Tokyo offers countless opportunities for unforgettable experiences, whether you're seeking the energy of a modern metropolis or the tranquility of traditional Japan. With these recommendations, you're sure to find a comfortable base and delicious dining options that suit your budget and preferences.
