https://www.olympiafxatm.com
You use your own debit card, you select the amount you want in the foreign currency and it gives it to you at the exchange rate.

Canex Forex in Eau Claire Market has always given the best exchanges for all of my travels. I always check their rates against calforex and, 100% of the time, Canex Forex has been better.

I’ve been comparing calforex rates versus ordering foreign currency online from CIBC and First Calgary (where we have our accounts) for the last few weeks now for a couple upcoming trips we have to the US and Mexico. I’ve bought a few times now and in every case, ordering online and either picking it up at our bank or having it delivered was a better rate than calforex. Maybe it’s just a day to day thing, but that has been my recent experience.

Cibc: 1001 dollars canadian just got me 391,000 Costa Rican colon
That same amount 391,000 would only cost 968 Canadian at calforex

Where's the Best Place for Currency Exchange?

When traveling abroad, one of the essential tasks is exchanging your home currency for the local currency. This process can be daunting, especially if you're unsure where to find the best exchange rates and avoid unnecessary fees. In this blog post, we'll explore the best places to exchange currency and provide you with valuable tips to ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

Banks and Credit Unions

If you have a bank account or belong to a credit union, it's worth checking with them first for currency exchange services. Many banks offer foreign currency exchange to their customers, often at competitive rates. However, it's essential to inquire about any additional fees or commissions they may charge, as these can quickly add up.

Airport Currency Exchange Counters

Airport currency exchange counters are undoubtedly convenient, but they typically offer less favorable exchange rates compared to other options. These counters are known for their high commissions and fees, making them an expensive choice for exchanging currency. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to exchange money at the airport, it's advisable to do so only for a small amount to get by until you can find a better alternative.

Currency Exchange Bureaus

Currency exchange bureaus, also known as "cambios" or "casas de cambio," are specialized in exchanging currencies. They are often found in major cities, tourist areas, and near hotels. While these establishments generally offer competitive exchange rates, it's crucial to shop around and compare rates from different bureaus. Additionally, be cautious of hidden fees or charges that may not be readily apparent.

Online Currency Exchange Services

In recent years, online currency exchange services have gained popularity due to their convenience and often favorable rates. These platforms allow you to order foreign currency online and have it delivered to your doorstep or pick it up at a local branch. However, it's essential to factor in any delivery or handling fees, as well as the time required for the currency to arrive.

Tips for Exchanging Currency
  • Research exchange rates beforehand to get an idea of what constitutes a fair rate.
  • Avoid exchanging large sums of money at airports or hotels, as they typically offer unfavorable rates.
  • Consider using a credit or debit card for purchases abroad, as many banks offer competitive exchange rates.
  • Be cautious of "no commission" claims, as there may be hidden fees or unfavorable exchange rates.
  • Carry a mix of cash and cards to have multiple payment options available.

By following these tips and exploring the various currency exchange options available, you'll be better equipped to get the most value for your money while traveling abroad.
