Travelling around Portugal in August for 23 days. What are must sees, any special tours etc? We’re mature adults who love to travel, eat and drink and photograph.

Lisbon, Cascais, Porto, Algarve, Coimbra, Sintra Where do you plan on spending the majority of your time?. With food a small tip sometimes restaurants will have lunch specials which includes appitizer, main and dessert for a set price. Whatever you do don’t eat the bread, olives, cheese etc it isn’t free you have to pay for it. Portuguese are potato eaters so most meals if it’s not fish will come with French fries, fish is normally boiled potatoes.

Omg eat the ”couvert” (olives, cheese & bread). Its amazing and often cheap (As little as 1€ each). Just get the price first. The potatoes are small with skins on - delicious.

i guess you should ask huh about everything that comes to the table. Are they tourist ripoff places like in St. Mark's Square in Venice?

If it’s on the table and you eat it, you pay. The only question is how much, although that’s often in the menu.

Evora (skeleton cathedral & amazing cheap food) Aviero (Venice of Portual also can do a day trip from there to Costa Nova by public bus) Coimbra (oldest university city in Portugal. Don't book accommodations in the area. But outside the city near the train station. Or you'll be climbing uphill.) Also all the other places mentioned above.

In Cascais walk down the beach to the next city Estoril or take the train. Behind the casino there's a night market. Amazing food and might see a folk dance. However not sure if it's just on the weekend.

Elvira also has one of the oldest standing stone sites. Very mystical

Loved the ‘pirate ship’ we took from Portimao to see the cliffs and caves from the water. It was a highlight

Definitely Porto. It has way more charm than Lisbon.

Gillian definitely worth the visit tho. For a few days. From there can visit Belem Sintra caiscais and across the river for the christ the redeemer

You sound like us. I’d recommend staying in Lagos over Portimão, quieter, smaller, more walkable and great restaurants. Similar great cliffs and beaches. You can visit Sagres & Cabo de Sao Vicente easily by bus or car and take the train to Portimão any time. We liked Faro a lot too (less touristy, great beaches and islands). We are heading from Lagos to Lisbon tomorrow then to Aveiro and Porto.

I stayed in Lagos as well. Took day trips from there.

We will be going to and staying at Lisbon, Sintra, Tavira, Evora, Coimbra, Pinhão and Porto - whew. Any ideas for each of these places? Trying to decide between driving or train and bus?

No need for a car for most places - we did Lisbon, Sintra, Coimbra and Porto inexpensively by train. Depends how much you want to see between other places - Pinhao is easy by picturesque train from Porto, although we used a car as we continued to Pindao and border fortified villages as well as Foz de Coa. In Evora, we stayed at the Moov hotel - very central, built in a former bullring they said. If you can find a cheap flight to Faro, that might be the easiest way to get to to Tavira. Toll motorways are expensive.

Watch out for gypsies in Lisbon! Beware of supposed bus inspectors...they are not inspectors...they set up the pickpockets...we learned the hard way!We had to pay for the Portuguese rolls that they automatically brought to the table...whether you eat it or not!
