Is Cancun Safe for Tourists Right Now?
13
October
Question:
Humans say...
Dan
We leave Sunday! Curious to know as well!
Donika Bajrami Mackenzie Arsenault
Rima
Dan please let me know after as we are planning a trip and we don’t know how the situation is, thanks!
Michelle
Rima Me too! I got flights for 2 weeks end of November and don’t know much of the situation.
Lynn
Dan there are lots of You Tube videos mainly by Americans who are travelling to Cancun during COVID. I watch every one of them with interest. The hotels seem to be doing a great job with safety precautions but the tourists are not wearing masks and gathering in groups which is odd to see given the strict rules in Canada.
Krystal
Lynn America's pay for their own healthcare the government doesn't care if they get sick because hospitals make money from it. In Canada it costs $ from the government budgets to pay for sick people.
Lynn
Krystal good point and this will certainly cost Canadian taxpayers plenty!
Stephen
Your usual Covid precautions, no different than anywhere else.
Janet
Stephen actually very different than here. I just got back on Friday
Stephen
Janet so did I. Nor much different lol.
Janet
Stephen then you live in a different world than the rest of us
Stephen
Janet so what's so different...?
Janet
Stephen not a single hotel chain in Canada has protocols anywhere near what's happening in MX. No covidiots in MX, every single MX we saw was masked properly, even small children. Not the case here in Canada. Outdoor use of masks very normal in MX, not here. That's just for starters...
Stephen
Janet resorts suck right now, I don't stay in them, I do beach front condos with rooftop pools for a third the price, pretty normal in them. I saw plenty of Mexicans and tourists in PLC not wearing masks or not wearing them properly, more than here.
Janet
Stephen if you say so... Not our experience. We have done villas in Playacar before but not this trip. It's been too fucking hard of a year to not enjoy some luxury. We don't do cheap travel, we're too old and boujee for that anymore
Stephen
Janet half million dollar condo with a million dollar view, I don't travel cheap, I travel smart.
Danielle
Stephen - name of this place please.

Janet the MX people and businesses look to be taking it very seriously. I wish the tourists I see on the videos about travelling during COVID would do the same.

Janet
Susan it's been at yellow in Quintana Roo for several weeks now
Janet
Just got back on Fri. Expect full flights to start with. Honestly, MX isn't screwing around with Covid. Our resort is super clean and vigilant. You arrive and luggage stays outside till disinfected and then it goes straight to room. You walk through a disinfecting tray when entering any building, off resort as well. In the lobby is a temp checking machine that records your temp and you're asked to use it daily. Rooms are disinfected with a fogging bomb then sealed with a door seal till you open it. Soft surfaces are disinfected with a steamer. On resort masks are required at restaurants and buffets. They ask you wear them in other public spaces indoors but not required. Most did. Sanitizer everywhere and mandatory in lots of spaces. Constant cleaning of high touch areas as well.
We went into Playa del Carmen, again not screwing around. I would say 90 % were wearing masks outdoors (it's law in MX btw in the orange stoplight, yellow is optional). Stores all were doing temp checks and disinfecting mats. Sanitizer everywhere!
I'm in Niagara Falls and felt way safer in MX than here at home. NF is packed every weekend with covidiots from hotspots. To put it in perspective, I'm also immune suppressed and never felt like I was at risk.
Shirley
Janet buffets? I thought those were a thing of the past?!!
Janet
Shirley as buffets use to be, yes. The current version is staff serves everything. Lots of stuff is now pre-plated as well. Some very inovatively! Think salads in little mason jars. Masks are required while not seated at your socially distanced table as well
Janet
Shirley we were at Iberostar Paraiso complex. Our reservation was for the Beach resort, they upgraded us to Maya as Beach isn't open, and we decided to upgrade further to the adult only Grand. We spent lots of time at Maya though.
Jenn
Janet are beaches not open in general in Mexico?
Janet
Jennifer Bouyoukos yes beaches, including public beachrs are open.
On the Iberostar Paraiso resort there's a resort called Iberostar Beach.
Jenn
Janet thanks! You’ve got me thinking about going now.
Janet
Jennifer Bouyoukos if you can do the quarantine I think it's worth it.
Jenn
Janet I can totally do the quarantine. Haven’t left my house since March and I’ve been working in my dining room. I need a break so bad!
GP
Janet it was really easy for me. Had a bit of a "omg I wanna get out" on my Day 10 but otherwise it went by like a breeze.
Janet
Hajime Pang good to hear.
Sandra
Janet ......which resort were you at?
Janice
Janet Kenny Su
Jackie
Janet that is great to hear that they are keeping themselves and everyone else as safe as possible.
Janet
Jackie yes. But there's always a few... They were wearing MAGA hats
Chris
Dash Piarr
Headra
Janet which resort did u stay at?
Janet
Headra Iberostar Paraiso complex
Juan
Are you asking in general or just COVID related? Also, are you staying in a resort in the surrounding area of Cancun or are you staying in the actual city of Cancun?
Carol
There are a few Youtubers documenting the situation/protocols
Janet
I'd add if looking at specific resorts join their Facebook groups! There is generally video and pics daily of the actual conditions and protocols. Remember, 3 hurricanes in 6 weeks to the area. Still lots of cleanup happening
Carol
Janet I'm in zihua and all protocols being followed with planes arriving. At the same time police driving by telling people on a loudspeaker to stay home
Rima
This is great detailed feedback thank you
Abneesh
Inder Gill
Renee
Just booked and going to Playa in 3 weeks. Appreciate all the feedback!!
Janet
Renee you'll have a great time!
Renee
Janet I go once or twice a year - so I’m ready!! U said ur in the Falls right?? I’m in Tonawanda
Janet
Renee yep Canadian side. We go every year, at least once. Currently in our 2 week quarantine but it was sooooo worth it. Now if the border would open, I miss crossing. I miss shopping on your side, especially with BF coming. I miss our fav MX restaurant
Renee
Ahh!! Cool!! We usually rent a house in port colborne in the summer! Yeah - I can’t believe it’s been closed this long. I miss Swiss Chalet!! Hahaha.

Aemun should we go in Jan 2021? Lol
Jenn
This is amazing to hear!
Leeann
I honestly felt safer in Cancun than Canada when I went in August.
Silvio
I was in Cancun just last week and it was amazing! I just flew back on a 747!
David
Silvio what’s the quarantine situation, when you got back?
Silvio
David standard quarantine measures for 14 days. I did have officers come knock on my door to check up on me. I invited them in for beers after as well. You do get phone calls everyday as well from someone.
Janet
Silvio we haven't had a single call yet. We did the ArriveCan app though and are doing the daily optional symptom check-in
Silvio
Janet lucky you. I guess they didn't trust me.
Leeann
Silvio weird, when I got back from Mexico in August I didn't even get a phone call. Nothing whatsoever. Hmm
Janet
Silvio we'll see. I've read such wildly different experiences with qurantine checkups
Leeann
And I never checked into ArriveCan either lol. I don't think it was mandatory then. They are cracking down more now since cases are rising again
Aneta
Janet thank very much.
Silvio
Leeann I guess they like me more
Janet
Leeann it's still not mandatory but it's "highly suggested". air canada counters in MX all had the qr code up for quick download.
Anna
Janet it's mandatory effective November 21.
Janet
Silvio lucky you! We got an A319. David, mandatory 14 day qurantine. It's all on the ArriveCan app that's highly recommended to use pre-departure home
David
Janet thanks.
Silvio
Janet Oof. Must have been a long flight!
Aneta
Silvio do they test in Mexico?
Silvio
Aneta nope, not like they do in Dubai.
Aneta
Silvio Thank you
Silvio
Aneta you're welcome
Janet
Aneta no testing required to enter MX. Jamaica changes biweekly and DR is changing regularly as well
Jessica
With which airline company?

If you follow Style Your Vacation on instagram she's in Tulum now and travelled from Toronto....she's been covering how it is at the airport and locally... So informative! Considering a trip soon because of it... Makes me feel more comfortable.
Janet
David so does Blue Cross and Medipac
Tasnuva
planning to be in cancun and Tulum in mid December. How is tulum in terms of precaution to covid ?

Janet
Tasnuva the whole area is the same.
Tasnuva
Janet thank you for the feedback!
Ana
By going, you are risking the life of all the workers, and locals. They don't have the same access to healthcare that we do. Why be so selfish?
Florence
Anades Weir-McPherson I live in Mexico and agree fully with what you say.
Janet
Anades Weir-McPherson and you do realize there are no social programs in MX right? Every friend we have in MX, every staff member is so grateful to be back at work. They've depleted most of the savings they had and NEED to work. If they don't work they'll be homeless and hungry. There's no CERB and the monthly food hampers were a joke and stopped a while ago. There are no families wandering Playa begging. Seniors sitting on curbs weaving palm baskets. The Mayan communities are exceptionally hard hit and in crisis. $$$$ is what's needed and like it or not, that means tourism and hospitality
Ana
Janet.... Gringa, my family lives in Mexico.

My sister stayed at the Moon palace not too long ago and she enjoyed it her resort did a lot to comply with covid restrictions. Felt really safe. Paperwork and check in takes a lot longer so prepare for that she was going 3-5 hours early for flights.
Gayle
Louise Jeffray
Phil Collier just in case you were thinking of going this year.
Kaatalin
It’s safe and clean. Some resorts are only filling up 30% and everyone social distances.
Janet
Kaatalin the 30% occupancies were under orange stoplight. When the area went to yellow several weeks ago they are now allowed 90% occupancies. Occupancies are varying wildly week to week but it's increasing overall
Christin
Karla
Christin
This making me consider going away before our mat leave ends soo hard
Karla
Christin excuse me?! Let’s go
Christin
Karla apparently the precautions are awesome and a lot safer then up here
Susan
Christin Take an extra two weeks to quarantine when you return.
Nesma
Karl Youssef
Lili
Are all the bars and clubs open in cancun?
Silvio
Lili yup!
Janet
Lili if you're thinking of a particular, fav place check first. There are reputable reports of some shutdown for non-covid precaution compliance. There's one resort not serving alcohol as well without food. They are blaming it on 'new' Covid regulations which is bs. It's they didn't renew their bar liquor license
Janet
Oh and the federales are on the job. As we were there Halloween and Day of the Dead, they were shutting down any bars with large crowds. In some cases, senor frogs, they made them stop serving alcohol without food. Covid regulations are taken really seriously
Kristal
I know people that are in Talum or have been lately and they said it was amazing!
Amy
Once they lift the mandatory 14 day quarantine I wanna go!
Katie
Amy me toooo !!!
Laura
Just be careful. It is extremely difficult to get travel insurance coverage right now. If you do it will not cover you if you get covid. I know also my employers insurance has said that they will not cover me if I travel either. But if you want to gamble, go ahead
David
Laura yea it will cover you.
David
You have to get separate coverage outside of group benefits.
Bal
David I saw sunwing offering free COVID 19 coverage up to $200,000.00. I am not sure if this is true?
David
Bal yeah a lot of companies are. I am a broker and listened to a webinar put on by manulife today and was very impressed with the coverage. Even if you start getting symptoms on the way and the country won’t let you in the company will reimburse. Not all coverages are equal. Sun wing is a travel company so I would be a little cautious.
Lori
David Oh. Yiu Sure about that? Got different information last March from the Snow bird association. Wonder
David
Lori they actually talked about snow birds and the coverage that was available. As always you have to be careful with pre-existing conditions
Grace
Lori thing have changed A LOT since last March in regards to Covid coverage.... thankfully most insurance companies are on board with coverage..
David
Char Lene oh good to know.
Brenda
Kathy that does not include any thing else very limited.
Laura
David how much for that coverage?
David
Laura depends on age but roughly $56 per person per week. A little cheaper for younger and a little more for over 55. This is not taking into consideration any pre existing conditions.
Kathy
Brenda Well that's why you get your normal coverage and then they are adding that peace of mind if your policy doesn't cover covid.
Janet
Kathy exactly! Many resort chains are offering coverage as well for Covid but no way in hell it should be anyone's primary coverage. Our chains policy is 40,000euros medical but the most useful part is fully covering ones expenses if qurantined or travel partner/family gets Covid.
Natalia
Jan Keck
Janet
Medipac (who is Snowbird Assoc official company) and Blue Cross have both been offering Covid covering policies since July! We bought a yearly policy from Blue Cross with $5mil coverage for $150 for both of us over age 50 with preexisting coverage
There are a handful of other companies as well, most well known in the nomad/backpacker circles.
Oh and our extended benefits out if country absolutely does cover us, including Covid. We are with manulife
Chris
Between March and June it was nearly impossible to find medical coverage for COVD-19. Most insurance companies were telling people 'due to the current travel advisory in place, coverage for covid is not available.'
But then around July we started to see market forces at work, and a couple of insurance companies started to offer coverage for covid, even while the Canadian government recommendation not to travel was still in place.
That got the ball rolling, and there are now 13 insurance companies offering medical coverage for covid-19 (see below).
Certain countries (Dominican Republic, Jamaica), airlines (air canada, westjet, air transat, sunwing, Emirates, Etihad, Virgin Atlantic), and vacation package operators (air canada vacations, westjet vacations, sunwing Vacations, Transat Vacations) are also starting to include covid-19 insurance for free.

Laura air canada supplied me with covid insurance. And my private medical company has me covered. And credit card
Francesc
I used Seven Corners insurance to travel to Europe for 2 months and it was pretty robust. I would suggest them
Grace
Most insurance companies AND travel agencies (or should I say airline agencies) offer now Covid insurance!!
Lisa
Laura FYI it depends on your current health. You can get insurance it is definately a little more expensive try manulife.
Plane has never been cleaner to travel south. Happy travels to all

one weeks vacation turns into 3 when you consider that you have to self isolate when you return for 14 days, even if you test negative once returning.
Usman
Terri true! But many people work from home anyway!
Terri
Usmanad I don't, that's the problem.

David
How do All Inclusives work right now? Anyone know?
Luda
David works like always just masks are required when you go to restaurants and temperature is checked on the entrance to the buffet restaurant..
Maria
I’m in Cancun right now and having a blast. However people tend to leave the masks behind shortly after arriving. So you need to police yourself and social distance. I don’t recommend going out to clubs etc while they are at limited capacity And staff are good about masks etc tourists start partying and forget, plus it’s also very hot and humid so hardly anyone is compliant. It’s still fairly empty so you can keep your distance and enjoy the weather
Jenn
Maria thanks! What about on the resorts? I wouldn’t be leaving the resort so I’m wondering what’s it like.
Maria
Jennifer Bouyoukos I find people stop wearing their masks on the resort shortly after they arrive. Staff take temps everytime before entering the restaurants/dining rooms. The buffets are open and staff serve you (instead of tourists touching all the serving utensils. Be mindful of keeping distance during the nightly entertainment... once people have a few drinks they all seem to forget we’re still in the middle of a pandemic.
Leeann
I recently got back from Cancun, off resort you need your mask it's mandatory but on resort once you arrive you don't need one. Only for gift shops, etc
Leeann
Clubs and everything were open
Kbelo
Maria i was planning on going this wkd. Can I mag you?
