We went through costco, much cheaper than anywhere else. We drove from london to Glasgow ,stopping at places in between. I found it very easy, just have to remember to do things the opposite way. Get an automatic if you can. If you have home and auto insurance with one company you can get umbrella insurance which covered us for 1mil
Chris
Make sure to rent automatic - they should be common enough, but you'll have to pay extra.
Drive around the airport for a couple minutes before "diving in", the roundabouts take a bit of getting used to.
Don't book through kayak or whatever - contact the rental office directly, to get better deals and an accurate quote.

We were shocked when we landed in Glasgow and discovered our Auto insurance that's provided through our credit card isn't valid in Scotland. Our insurance for a week was more than twice the cost of the rental. Investigate that before booking!

We did the same thing. Driving in Manchester was pretty confusing but once we got out of the city it was fine! Make sure you have a gps ready to help with the weird 3 lane traffic circles
Judy
Costco.., verify your insurance will cover in UK..
Debra
Costco second driver free
Mick
Document and throughly inspect before leaving depot ensure gas is full
Mick
Upon return
Wendy
Do a vehicle walk around and take pics before leaving the rental place- that way you’re covering yourself.
Brenna
beyond that, make sure the company documents everything. I did all that because there was some damage to the front light. They wouldn’t accept my photos and charged me $500 to replace the light cap. I was livid. Mind you this was in Montreal, but
Vivienne
Keep to the speed limit there are cameras everywhere
Renee
Get an automatic and pay the extra for a GPS.
Sheila
Renee - or use Google Maps on your phone for free.
Susan
We are arriving MAN in Sept. we always use Costco. We also always take a video walk around of vehicle in whatever country we are in. Pick up and drop off) Also take photo of Odometer. Even if unlimited mileage.
Tony
Bring your own GPS, they charge daily for those in Europe!
Cathy
Never had a problem. Except maybe with the size of the roads
Nancy
Roundabouts are great - if you miss your turn just keep going around until you get back!
Karen
Photograph or video every inch of the car. Had a terrible experience with Avis. Be prepared for really narrow streets with cars parked on both sides and they don’t always park in the direction of traffic so if you aren’t used to driving on the wrong side of the road it can really mess with your sense of direction. Just remember that the driver should always be in the middle of the road if at any time your passenger is in the middle you might be on the wrong side! Good luck it is a beautiful country and you will gave a great time I’m sure.

Check out carrentals.com we got a storming deal through them.

We have had no trouble declining insurance in Scotland but must pay with a credit card that covers it. Going on Saturday so hope that’s still true!
Katie
Jose read the fine print on the credit card insurance. Ask for a copy. Many countries aren’t covered but usually if you rent elsewhere but drive to the country , you are covered. For example, Italy isn’t covered on most cards, so we rent in France and drive into Italy. That is covered.
Katie
Brenda we found them great also!
Selena
Be aware that most rentals are standard and even if you drive stick shift, you’ll have to use the opposite hand to what you’re used to. Caused me a lot of trouble! Highly recommend requesting an automatic.
Lee
Selena excellent advice!

I have found enterprise to be the cheapest in the UK.
Judith
Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental have always been good, much better prices than the international companies.
Jody
Get the extra insurance or if you can add a rider onto your current insurance to cover you and the car. Also double check where the car hire return is versus the airport. We ended up having to make a 45 minute bus ride to the car drop off as the airport wasn’t in the city.
Heather
Check with your car insurance. Most cover car rental in foreign countries. Also check the policy with your credit card company. If you have Amex, they have the best coverage by far with no need for additional insurance. If you have more than one driver get them added to the rental. If there is an accident and they are driving and not registered as a driver, you will be liable for all damage. Not worth the risk.

Renting a Car in the UK: Driving from Manchester to Edinburgh
Planning a road trip from Manchester to Edinburgh in the United Kingdom? Renting a car can be a convenient and flexible way to explore the stunning landscapes and charming towns along the way. Here's what you need to know about renting a car in the UK and some advice for your journey.
Rental Companies and Picking Up the Car
Major rental companies like Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, and Budget have numerous locations in Manchester, making it easy to pick up your rental car. It's advisable to book your rental well in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and secure the best rates.
When picking up your rental car, carefully inspect the vehicle for any existing damages and make sure they are documented on the rental agreement. Familiarize yourself with the car's controls, and don't hesitate to ask the rental agent any questions you might have.
Driving in the UK
Driving in the UK can be a unique experience for those accustomed to driving on the right-hand side of the road. Remember, in the UK, you'll be driving on the left-hand side of the road, which can take some getting used to. Additionally, be prepared for narrow roads, especially in rural areas and small towns.
It's essential to familiarize yourself with UK road signs and traffic rules, which may differ from those in your home country. For example, speed limits are posted in miles per hour, and there are specific rules for navigating roundabouts.
The Journey from Manchester to Edinburgh
The drive from Manchester to Edinburgh is approximately 220 miles (354 km) and can take around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the number of stops you make along the way.
One popular route is to take the M6 motorway north towards Carlisle and then continue onto the A74(M) and M74 motorways, which will take you directly into Edinburgh. This route offers scenic views of the Lake District and the Scottish Borders.
Alternatively, you could take a more leisurely route through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, offering opportunities to explore charming villages and stunning landscapes.
Tips and Considerations
- Familiarize yourself with UK driving laws and customs, such as giving way to traffic coming from the right at roundabouts.
- Be prepared for toll roads, especially when traveling on motorways. Have cash or a debit/credit card ready for toll payments.
- Plan for rest stops and breaks along the way to avoid fatigue.
- Consider purchasing a road map or GPS device for navigation, as mobile data coverage can be patchy in some rural areas.
- Check the rental company's policies regarding cross-border travel if you plan to visit Scotland.
- Make sure to fill up the gas tank before returning the rental car to avoid additional charges.
With proper planning and preparation, renting a car in the UK can be a fantastic way to explore the diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage between Manchester and Edinburgh. Enjoy your road trip!
