You are going to have to pick one location, Tokyo or near the cruise terminal in Yokohama. We chose being close to the terminal, prices were better there. We’ll be using public transportation to move back and forth into Tokyo to sightsee
Barb
Thanks!

Yokohama Best Western. Terminals are very close. All hotels are small in a Japan. Bring comfee footwear. Download google translate. Japan is my favourite place so far.

Also suggest airbnb, but want to say you need to measure your expectations in terms of size of accommodation. Real estate is at a premium. No hotel room in Tokyo at a layman’s price will be “spacious”.

I agree with the poster above - rooms in Tokyo and Japan in general will be small but well organized. Don't knock a small hotel room until you try it!
Vella
Agreed. Rooms maybe smaller in Japan but they are efficiently laid out.

There have been problems with air bnb in Japan, you might want to check first. Probably you should go a few days before your cruise to the shinjuku area which has good transportation to and from the airport and Yokohama. There is a Japan Travel friendly Discussion group that has a lot of information.
Barb
Thanks, I will look for it online.

We were in the very first cohort a couple of years ago with Japan Panoramic Tours who do days tours of Tokyo. They are still going strong and, at least then, we're the only tour group doing this and an excellent substitute for hop - on hop - off busses that Tokyo does not have. There is a pick up in central Shinghaku (sp?).
Barb
Thanks, will check them out.

Finding inexpensive rooms in Tokyo is tough; finding inexpensive Large-ish accommodations is theoretically possible....I’ve never seen them, but it has to be possible
Morgan
Small and expensive is pretty much the standard for accommodations in Japan compared to Canadian expectations, with Tokyo and the "destination" parts of it being pretty much the extreme end of that.
You may want to consider looking on a map view of hotel websites. I usually filter it down to the lowest pricing bracket and see if there are obvious clusters around as those are likely the cheaper areas. Keeping in mind that there will be a reason for the cheapness, so it's always worth reading through reviews, ratings and travel guides on that one. If the primary reason it's cheaper is because you have to travel farther to get to the action, it may still be worth it given the efficiency of Tokyo's public transport system.
It will likely be more crowded than you expect/are used to, but you do have the flexibility to try to go outside the rush hour times as a tourist, in most cases, so it may be reasonable for travelling with day bags.

All accommodations in Japan but especially in Tokyo are small and exoensive. They make good use of thr space though so you'll have everything you need, just very cozy.
Barb
Thanks, Do you have the name of a Local Tour company we could use to see some of the highlights of Yokohama and Tokyo

Hotel Recommendations in Tokyo Near the Cruise Terminal
Tokyo is a bustling metropolis with a wide range of accommodation options to choose from. However, if you're looking for a hotel near the cruise terminal, your options may be more limited.
Here are a few recommendations for hotels that are both convenient to the cruise terminal and offer a comfortable and affordable stay:
- Hilton Tokyo Bay: This 5-star hotel is located right next to the cruise terminal, making it the perfect choice for those who want to be as close to the ship as possible. The hotel offers spacious rooms with stunning views of Tokyo Bay, as well as a variety of amenities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, and multiple restaurants.
- Hotel Nikko Tokyo Bay: This 4-star hotel is also located near the cruise terminal and offers a range of rooms and suites to choose from. The hotel has a rooftop pool, fitness center, and several restaurants and bars.
- Keisei Hotel Miramare: This 3-star hotel is a more affordable option that is still located within walking distance of the cruise terminal. The hotel offers basic but comfortable rooms, as well as a restaurant and bar.
In addition to these hotels, there are a number of other options available in the area. However, it's important to note that prices can be high, especially during peak season. It's always a good idea to book your hotel in advance to secure the best possible rate.
Day Tours
If you're looking for things to do in Tokyo during your stay, there are a number of day tours available. Here are a few of the most popular options:
- Tokyo City Tour: This tour will take you to some of Tokyo's most famous landmarks, including the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower, and Senso-ji Temple. You'll also have the opportunity to do some shopping in the Ginza district.
- Mount Fuji Day Trip: This tour will take you to Mount Fuji, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. You'll have the opportunity to hike to the summit of the mountain, or simply enjoy the views from the base.
- Hakone Day Trip: This tour will take you to Hakone, a beautiful mountain resort town. You'll have the opportunity to visit Lake Ashi, take a boat ride, and see the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
These are just a few of the many day tours available in Tokyo. With so much to see and do, you're sure to find something that interests you.
