We stayed in Manarola and loved it. It was the perfect size, highly recommended. Spent time in Florence and Montepulciano too and both were beautiful. If you decide you're into that I can send you the info for our specific accommodations.

I am also interested. Could you please send specific information. Thanks.
Kate
Here is where we stayed in Manarola. We took the room without a terrace to save money and regretted it the whole time. Get any other room. Nice, clean, simple. Amazing views and location.

And our budget pick in Florence. Totally a hostel, but was in a good location and affordable.

Pei, for what it's worth I'm not a hiker, but my husband is. He did a lot of hiking when we stayed in Manarola, headed north and his photos are incredible. He hiked all the way past Corniglia where I took the train to meet him. The town the most northern is super touristy (montorossa al mare), worth a day trip but I wouldn't stay there. Then we took the train back to the last town Riomaggiore and walked back home on the nicely paved path. Manarola at night is gorgeous, and quiet. With one pub that had live music when we were there.
Happy planning!

I also stayed in Manarola and loved our choice. If you need specifics please pm me. Check which trails are open before you go. They are often closed due to maintenance / landslides. This past summer, most were closed but we did the hike between Corniglia and Vernazza. Have a great time, Cinque Terre is spectacular!

We just did a day trip out of Florence with Walkabout and it was amazing! You'll love it!
Leslie
I recommend staying in Vernazza, and there is no bad route or views. Magical!
Pei
Amazing! Thank you for your recommendation ! I'm most likely going to stay in Vernazza
; do you also know where to catch ferries to other villages ?
Kate

Pei
Thank you guys so much for all your tips!

I stayed in Riomaggiore a few years ago and I thought it was a beautiful and charming place. It would have been convenient to get to except there was a train strike which affected only certain trains and lines. I took a different the train from Rome to Pisa to La Spezia and then to Riomaggiore.
Heidi
You should probably research and see if the hiking trails are even open! We went a couple of years ago and only trail open was Vernazza to Monterosso! It was Beautiful! We ended up hiking a lot of small paths above the towns instead!
Not great for tourism
Cindy
We are going in sept. Opted to stay in monterroso. Can drive to it and also somewhere to go out at night. Lots of hiking from there.
Pei
Thank you everyone for the recommendations ! Every was gorgeous.especially Manarola and Vernazza ! I really made use of the train station there !

Monterosso was beautiful when I was there last fall! Would go back in a heartbeat.

Visiting Cinque Terre: The Perfect Two-Day Itinerary
The Cinque Terre, a stunning coastal region in northwestern Italy, is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking breathtaking scenery, charming villages, and unforgettable hiking experiences. If you're planning a two-day visit from Florence, here's a suggested itinerary to make the most of your time.
Day 1: Explore Monterosso al Mare
Start your Cinque Terre adventure in Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most accessible of the five villages. This charming town is divided into two parts: the old town and the modern beachfront area. Spend the morning strolling through the narrow streets, admiring the colorful houses, and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere.
After exploring Monterosso, embark on the famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), a scenic hiking path that connects all five villages. The trail from Monterosso to Vernazza offers breathtaking views of the coastline and terraced vineyards. The hike takes approximately 2 hours and is considered moderately challenging.
Upon reaching Vernazza, reward yourself with a well-deserved lunch at one of the charming trattorias or cafés, savoring the local seafood specialties and sipping on a glass of Cinque Terre wine.
Day 2: Hike from Vernazza to Riomaggiore
On your second day, continue your hiking adventure by taking the trail from Vernazza to Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of the Cinque Terre. This leg of the hike is considered the most challenging but also offers the most dramatic and picturesque views.
The trail from Vernazza to Corniglia is steep and involves climbing numerous stairs, but the stunning vistas along the way make the effort worthwhile. Once in Corniglia, take a break to appreciate the unique charm of this village, perched high on a cliff.
From Corniglia, continue on the trail to Manarola, a village known for its vibrant houses clinging to the rocky cliffs. Take your time to explore the narrow alleys and admire the colorful buildings before reaching the final destination, Riomaggiore.
Spend the evening in Riomaggiore, wandering through the charming streets, visiting the historic castle, and enjoying a delicious dinner while watching the sunset over the Ligurian Sea.
With this two-day itinerary, you'll experience the best of the Cinque Terre's hiking trails, villages, and stunning coastal scenery. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for steep climbs and descents along the trails.
