How can I make the most of a 10-hour layover in Tokyo?

Question:

Hi all! I'm heading to Thailand in December (have been before so no recommendations needed). On the way there we have a long stopover in Denver and on the way back we have a 10 hour layover in Tokyo. Looking for recommendations for the best things to do in both Denver and Tokyo for a day as I've never been to either place! Thanks!

Denver airport is far from the city. However there is a new rail line that takes you downtown for $9 each way. https://www.denver.org/about.../transportation/airport-rail/

Wow thanks! Wish I knew that before I booked a hotel but too late now...it's non-refundable.

Do you stop in Narita or Haneda? Haneda is only about 20 minutes from downtown Tokyo where as Narita is about an hour each way. Regardless, I would spend a couple hours walking around Shinjuku. I spend an hour or two walking around the Gyoen garden. Tons of shopping/ food option available as well. Ginza is also very nice but more upscale and expensive. The Skytree is pretty close to a train station and gives an awesome view of the city. Even has a cafe at the top. If your layover in Tokyo is in the evening or night, I would recommend Shinjuku as it’s full of neon signs and makes for quite the experience

Agreed. Shinjuku is super easy to get to by train, and even just spending time in and around the station is fun. Tons of shopping, amazing food options, easy walk to the Government Building for free views, Shinjuku Chuo Garden, Kabukicho (which is perfectly safe, FYI). Highly recommended.

My flight stops in Narita. I have a 10 hr layover there arriving at 9 am. So I have enough time to get to Tokyo and spend a bit of time looking around there. Thanks for the suggestions! Is there a train from the airport to Tokyo?

Michelle Ellehcim there is. The Narita Express will take you straight there. You need a reserved seat though, so you can drop in to the JR office or buy a ticket out of the kiosks there. Train leaves approx every half hour, and boarding instructions and station announcements are in English.

Oh and Shibuya is also very fun. I’d recommend grabbing a coffee at the Starbucks and watch the people at Shibuya crossing

If you have an international driver's licence(or just go get one) the best money I'd spent was at mari-cart (essentially, mariocarting around tokyo). It's absolutely so much fun!

They where actually just sued by Nintendo and forced to shut down. Partially because of copyright issue, but also because they’re where so many traffic accidents involved with them. Not judging or anything. That’s just what I came across online when I was in Tokyo

If you are stopping in Narita, we thoroughly enjoyed Narita and its 1,000 yr old temple, gardens and the town itself. It's a 10 minute train ride from the airport; there are help desks in the airport that will give you a map of the town. Beautiful gardens, lovely local shops and restaurants.

Thanks, didn't realize there was anything much in Narita. Might stay in that area instead since we have only 10 hours but would love to see Tokyo too even if it's just for a few hours. Guess I'll play it by ear. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for suggestions for Japan. I have a 24 hour layover there. Theres a large market near narita?

There is a fish market in Narita. Since you have 24 hours, I would highly suggest heading into Tokyo

There is a hop on hop off bus around tokyo daytime which brings you to a few main areas. the only place unfortunatly it does not do is Shibuya which is a pretty cool place but you can get there by train easy enough

I would take the Narita Express. Took the bus my first time in Tokyo and regretted it as it was nearly two hours to Tokyo station

Exploring Denver and Tokyo: A Layover Adventure

Layovers can be a blessing in disguise, offering the opportunity to explore new destinations, even if it's just for a day. If you're heading to Thailand in December and have a long stopover in Denver on the way there, and a 10-hour layover in Tokyo on the way back, you're in luck! These cities have plenty to offer for a short visit.

Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City offers a unique blend of urban attractions and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for a layover. Here are some suggestions for how to spend your time in Denver:

  • Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre: This stunning natural amphitheater surrounded by towering red rock formations is a must-visit. Explore the visitor center, hike the trails, or catch a concert if one is scheduled during your visit.
  • 16th Street Mall: This lively pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown Denver is lined with shops, restaurants, and street performers. Grab a bite to eat, do some people-watching, or visit the Denver Art Museum.
  • Larimer Square: This historic district is a charming blend of Victorian architecture, trendy boutiques, and top-notch dining options. Stroll through the quaint streets and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is a bustling metropolis that seamlessly blends traditional Japanese culture with cutting-edge modernity. With a 10-hour layover, you'll have enough time to explore some of the city's highlights:

  • Sensoji Temple: This ancient Buddhist temple in the heart of Tokyo is a cultural icon. Explore the temple grounds, walk through the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, and browse the lively Nakamise shopping street.
  • Shibuya Crossing: Known as the "Scramble Crossing," this iconic intersection is a must-see for its sheer volume of pedestrians crossing in every direction when the lights turn green.
  • Harajuku: This trendy neighborhood is a hub for Japanese youth culture, fashion, and quirky shops. Wander through Takeshita Street, visit the Meiji Shrine, and indulge in some people-watching.

Remember to plan your time wisely, accounting for transportation and potential delays. Layovers can be a fantastic opportunity to explore new cities, even if it's just for a few hours. Embrace the adventure and make the most of your time in Denver and Tokyo!
