Ever Missed a Day of Your Vacation Due to Flight Changes?

Question:

We booked flights to Europe a while back with change of flights in Toronto. We had a change of itinerary which has our stop in Toronto increasing from 3 hours to 27 hours so we get into Europe a day late. Has anyone else had something similar happen to them and what they did about it. I definitely do not want to lose a day in Portugal.

I've had something similar with Xiamen Airlines (from China) flying to Bangkok, and that airline offered me a full refund of what I originally paid without any hassle. Call the airline or the agent that booked the ticket and see what they can do.

Definitely contact the airline. Last year I was also notified of an unacceptable time change and when I contacted the airline (AC) I found out that for the really low fares, when a sched change happens, a computer somehows does the re-booking. If your ticket is of a higher value, it is an actual reservaton agent who comes up with your new and more acceptable flight time. When I contacted the airline in my case, they were very accomodating and changed my flight to better times.

AC cancelled my return flight from OGG & rebooked us one day earlier
We weren't happy as we had lots of family/friends events & had to make changes to our schedule plus flt from Kauai back to Oahu
AC gave me a 15% off voucher for a future booking w/1 yr expiration date - still not great because that discount is what a friend who is an AC employee can get for us as a friends & family rate

Unexpected Layover: What to Do?

You've booked your flights, packed your bags, and are ready to embark on your European adventure. But then, you receive an unexpected itinerary change, and your layover in Toronto has increased from 3 hours to a whopping 27 hours. You're now faced with the prospect of losing a day in Portugal, and you're wondering what you can do about it.

Don't worry, you're not alone. Many travelers have experienced similar situations. Here are a few things you can do:

  1. Contact the airline. Call or email the airline as soon as possible to express your concerns. They may be able to reroute you on an alternative flight with a shorter layover or provide you with compensation for the inconvenience.
  2. Explore the airport. While it may not be the most exciting option, exploring the airport can help you pass the time and burn off some excess energy. Many airports have restaurants, shops, museums, and even spas where you can relax and recharge.
  3. Take a day trip. If your layover is long enough, you could consider taking a day trip to a nearby city. This is a great way to explore the local culture and see some of the sights. However, keep in mind that you may need to pay for transportation and activities.
  4. Get some rest. If you're feeling tired, use your layover as an opportunity to catch up on some sleep. Many airports have comfortable seating areas or even sleep pods where you can relax and nap.
  5. Work or study. If you have work or studies to catch up on, your layover can be a productive time. Bring your laptop or books and make the most of the free Wi-Fi at the airport.

Remember, even though an unexpected layover can be frustrating, there are many things you can do to make the best of it. Stay calm, explore your options, and make the most of your extra time. Your European adventure will still be waiting for you when you finally arrive.
