I don't know if you've already booked your accommodation, but most airbnbs in Japan come with the portable wifi. I found that to be super effective when I was there in August.

Danielle I have booked an airbnb, but it doesn't come with pocket wifi unfortunately. I should've looked out for that -- if only I'd known!

My husband and I went to Japan in July and we got an eConnect Portable wifi device and it was great! Worked flawlessly, was super cheap, had it delivered to our hotel, and I would highly recommend it. The only thing I had to worry about was putting it a post box on our last day there.

4G, I think it was about $5 a day, but don't quote me on that because it's 1 am.
You'll want to note that they only work where you get cell reception, but unless you're going hiking or WAY out into the country it shouldn't be an issue. The only place we didn't get service was DEEP in the Hida mountains.

Definitely get one! I went to Japan a couple months ago, and wasted so much time leeching internet from random convenience stores. Free internet was hard to come by, in my experience, and it would have been useful to have it when taking transit.

Nicolb it looks like you can pick them up at the airport or even have one delivered to where you're staying.

I recommend getting it delivered. You just set it up online before you leave, pay online. Way less hassle.
