Can I Enter Dublin & England on My Expired British Passport with Dual Citizenship?

Question:

Rod
They won’t let you in with an expired passport but I’m sure they won’t care if you’re in the same line as the people you are travelling with
Sylvie
Enter with your family/party through citizen line. Since your husband is citizen they process all of you together.
Amanda
Yup exactly but you will need to use your Canadian passport.
Sylvie
Yes. My husband is from Barbados. We go home every year. Our child and I are Canadian and we all travel with Canadian Passports but place of birth for my husband is Barbados. We have never had a problem and immigration always says to us "Welcome home"
Margaret
First thing, I don't think your "expired" passport holds any value. Not a good idea to produce that unless you want to risk being pulled aside, questioned and delayed.
Parveen
Why not just renew your British passport
Sue
We fly out on July 26 so not enough time to renew
Derek
Sue I believe you may be able to have it expedited or have you already asked?
Sue
Derek I checked online but it’s not worth paying double the price to expedite and it’s not a guarantee that it would get done by July 26. I have a valid Canadian passport so it’s good enough.
Derek
Sue Okay.
Suzi
I saw a women get refused a flight because one of her passports has expired. I think she was French but living in Canada her Canadian had expired. Ps she’d been allowed to fly to France.
Mark
Bad idea. I’ve tried this. You cannot enter on one passport (def not an expired one), and re-enter Canada on another one. Wait in line, it’s not worth the hassle the Canadian immigration will give you on the way back.
Sayaka
I believe new rules state if you have a Canadian passport you must produce it upon returning so even if they had a non expired British one they would have to travel with both
Gene
Wrong. Brazil needs a visa for Canadians but British do not. I have VALID Canadian and British passports. I went to Brazil o British and came back declaring having two passports.
Visa rule was circumvented. Circa 2005.
Sue
I guess my main point is I didn’t want to wait in the longer Immigration line so I like the advice of going into the EU line with my family since they have a valid British passport and just produce my valid Canadian passport. I was concerned that they would send me to the International line after all the wait.
Jonathan
If they do. Then it's unfortunate but not the end of the world. Usually immigration wants to see everyone who is traveling together. So I'm sure this is common.
Norma
I’ve never seen this they will generally allow a family to use the same custom clearing line. We are in a similar situation in our family.
Elin
I know this for sure. You can join your family in the EU line and still use your Canadian passport. I've travelled through many EU countries with my British passport and my boyfriend's Canadian and he just comes into line with me. Especially with a child, they won't turn you down
Elin
You won't be able to use your British passport though. But say your passport was valid and you used it to enter, you still need to use your Canadian passport to get back into Canada. You don't need to use the same passport.
Sue
Thanks, that really helps!
Gene
Elin Davies That's what I did. BUT both passports were valid.
Daniela
Why not renewing the expired passport? And eliminate any possible drama?
Sue
It’s too late to renew my British passport as I fly out on July 26.
Shane
Expired passport is not useable for travel or any other purpose
Guy
Just follow your husband in the British line and present your Canadian passport. I do it all the time with my wife in Belgium. She follows me in the Fastlane and is on her Canadian passport
Ishbel
A passports a passport I’d say if it’s expired it’s useless
You don’t mess with customs officers
Derek
Precisely.
David
UK immigration officers not keen on you flying on one passport and presenting a different one at the gate (from personal experience)
Tiziana
A general rule of thumb for any country's Immigration department. And passports need to be valid, regardless of citizenship. You're not buying a 40oz bottle of rum; you're entering a country.
E
In Dublin the lines is shorter for none Europeans , I fly to Ireland often with a Canadian passport
Jackie
Is your Canadian passport an e-passport so can be scanned? My husband just scanned his Canadian passport in e-reader at Gatwick when we went through. We did the same in Sydney too. See if your London and Dublin airport are set up for epassports and you’re set! No more stamps but fly through passport control
Sue
No, I’ve never heard of a-passport.
Sue
‘e-passport’
Jackie
It’ll have a symbol on front of your Canadian passport https://www.canada.ca/.../news/video/canadian-epassport.html think it’s been around about 5 yrs now

If you have citizenship if another country you must leave on your canadian and enter on your British. It must be valid or you could experience problems entering. Thats what i have been told anyway. It would be better to not even present your british passport.
Sue
It’s fine, I will just use my Canadian passport
Derek
Sue Good idea — just deal w/the lineup.
Catherin
You can still go with your family just dont present a British passport thats expired to avoid the problems
Adam
They'll allow you in - they tend not to separate families in civilized countries - even at check in lines... My wife is Canadian and my son & I have dual, we always get through with no problems.

Dual Citizenship and Immigration: Navigating Entry with Multiple Passports
Having dual citizenship can be a great advantage when it comes to travel, as it provides you with multiple options for entering different countries. However, it's important to understand the rules and regulations of each country to ensure a smooth entry process.
In the case of flying with a valid Canadian passport but considering entering Dublin and England on an expired British passport, there are a few things to consider. While using an expired passport may seem like a convenient way to avoid longer lines at Immigration, it's essential to remember that Immigration officials are trained to verify the validity of travel documents.
Entering a country on an expired passport may raise red flags and could potentially lead to delays or further questioning. In the case of Dublin and England, it's likely that you will be directed to the International line for further processing if you attempt to enter on an expired passport.
It's also worth noting that each country has its own rules and regulations regarding entry, so it's essential to research the specific requirements for Dublin and England before making a decision. While your husband and son may enter with their British passports, it's best to ensure that all travelers are in compliance with the entry requirements of each country.
In conclusion, while it may be tempting to use an expired passport to expedite the entry process, it's always best to err on the side of caution and follow the proper procedures. By ensuring that all travel documents are valid and up to date, you can help avoid any potential issues or delays during your travels.
Sue
I have dual citizenship. I will fly with my valid Canadian passport but thinking to enter Dublin & England on my expired British passport, thus avoiding the longer lines at Immigration. Will they allow me in or send me to the International line? Both my husband and son will enter with their British passport. Thoughts?
