Looking for unique and off-the-beaten-path attractions in New York City?

Question:

My mom and I are headed to New York for May long (plus a couple days). We have been once before in 2017 and did the touristy things (top of the rock, hop on jop off bus, 9 11 memorial, cruise around the statue of liberty, movie walking tour of Central Park, and walked Times Square). We're wondering what else we should see and we are desperate for food recommendations as there are so many choices it's overwhelming! We're staying in between times Square and Central Park. Thank for any advice!

So great! My mom and I just got back. We went out to the botanical gardens. So nice to see everything in bloom and the different exhibits. Took the tram to Rosevelt island, did the edge at sunset… pretty watching the city go from day to night. Went to Potus on Broadway… HILARIOUS!!

Second vote for the Tenement Museum. Also Radio City Music Hall, rent bikes and spend a day in Central Park. We toured St John the Divine Cathedral, then ate the biggest & best slice very nearby at Koronet Pizza, then grabbed shakes at the Seinfeld diner (Tom’s) for dessert. The Natural History Museum is fantastic, as is grand central station. We were disappointed that we didn’t get to Cloisters, and wish we would have fit in more than one broadway show. Have a great time!

Museum of Natural History, go for drinks on the rooftop patio at Gansevoort Hotel in the meat packing district and see if you have any chance of getting into one of the dinner clubs like the Mansion Supper Club or for a true show, Lips Drag Queen Show Palace Restaurant & Bar. Recommend the Lobby Bar at the W in Times Square (7th floor if I recall) for cocktails and the Speakeasy and Secret Room for cocktails and a side of burlesque that's unlike the what we get here. I always love a dinner at Smith and Wollanski's as you never know what celebrity you might see in that room. Oh and if you're up for shows, go off Broadway. Talent is amazing with a lot of well known performers without the fight for tickets and much more enjoyable. Enjoy

FAO Schwartz (the famous toy store in every movie), see a broadway show, or a show at Carnegie Hall, or both.
We found all the food gems away from the touristy areas. We just hopped on a train and went to different districts (safe ones) and walked around and just came across fantastic food.
The financial district is also cool to see.

I lived in Brooklyn for a few years so of course I’d encourage you to explore there! Williamsburg and Greenpoint are full of cool hip restaurants and boutiques, Park Slope and Cobble Hill have the most beautiful brownstones, along with fabulous shops and dining. Could also explore the DUMBO area and the nearby parks along the river with amazing views of the bridges.

And some food suggestions you can look into: Cafe Mogador, Momofoku, Big Gay Ice Cream, PDT (a famous speakeasy, so fun), Jacks Wife Freda, Freeman’s, Franks Wine Bar, Cafe Spaghetti, Five Leaves, Milk and Roses, Scalino GP, Peter Pan Donuts… I’ll send more if I think of them

Ok last comment haha. Pick a cool neighborhood and just explore! My faves to explore were always the East Village, Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village. Or relax in the parks like Bryant Park (so close to your hotel, so pretty next to the big public library) or Washington Square Park.

Profile picture of Richelle

Richelle

I agree with Kari, explore Brooklyn or the Village!! I would also suggest some museums, you can't go wrong with MOMA or the Met....I also really liked the Guggenheim and the Whitney. Never made it to the Natural History museum, but I think it would also be awesome!

We did a Free Tours By Foot food tour in Greenwich that was a lot of fun. We also did an architectural boat tour around the island of Manhattan on a beautiful yacht.

Profile picture of Robbin

Shanon Free Tours by Foot (Walking Tour) was theeee best thing I did on my 2 one week trips to NY. We booked one pm of Mid-town Manhattan and then the 6 hour all of Manhattan walking tour. OMG absolute best experience. BTW, please donate well to the Guides. This is their job. When we went in 2011 the recommended donation for the 6 hour day was $25. We each gave them $35.
PS we went to a performance @ Carnegie Hall for $26.50. Fantastic!! We went online and selected our seats. We sat in seats from Pretty Woman; nice balcony tall velvet chairs
.
If you like TV shows many are taped @ Rockefeller Centre. Book online or stand in line. We got the last 2 seats for Conan O’Brien in 2009. All the shows are free.
How about book a Designer Shopping Tour. Groups of 6-12 people. They bring you to all up and coming designers!!! Clothing, jewelry, handbags etc.
