Hike it for sure!!! We stayed at a rental in Framura and took the train in. The hike between the towns is so worth it. (also consider renting bikes to ride through the old train tunnels along the coast). In Lucca make sure to rent bikes and ride along the wall.

Easy to take the train from Genoa and then continue on to Lucca, with a stop in Pisa. Though give yourself time in le Cinque Terre...to walk the trails and then come back via boat for those iconic impressions of the colourful villages.

Use rome2rio to help you figure routing. Too, Rick Steve's guide books and free online resources are a go to for Italy. He really introduced the Cinque Terre to us in North America.

Just FYI that you have to pay to hike on the trails between towns, it wasnt always like that so it's not always mentioned. Also, if you are going in summer it can get super duper hot (40°). We weren't as prepared for the heat as we should have been, so we ditched the hiking and got gelato on the beach that day

Randi did not know we had to pay to walk the trail. Thank you

There was a ferry that went daily to all the 5 towns. Could hope on or off and spend as much time as you wanted at each location! Was amazing to see the beauty from the water!

Buy a couple bottles of wine and hike it. Stop have wine and enjoy the views. Worth the walk. Probably will take 2 days with an overnight at one of the towns. Or walk 3 towns and finish by the train if you wish to do 1 day.

Some of the trail is currently closed, and I believe you have to register to do the open parts. That is what I was told when I was there in April.

Tiffany thank-you i will look into that.

Traveling to Genoa, Italy: Exploring Cinque Terre
When visiting the beautiful city of Genoa, Italy, one of the most popular day trips is to the stunning Cinque Terre region. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit destination for any traveler exploring the Italian Riviera. However, the question arises: should you plan a day trip to Cinque Terre from Genoa or save it for when you're in Lucca?
Day Trip to Cinque Terre from Genoa
Taking a day trip to Cinque Terre from Genoa is a viable option, especially if you have limited time in the region. The distance between Genoa and Cinque Terre is approximately 100 kilometers, which can be covered in around 1.5 to 2 hours by train or car. This makes it possible to enjoy the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre in a single day.
One of the highlights of visiting Cinque Terre is the opportunity to hike between the five towns: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The hiking trails offer breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, terraced vineyards, and the vibrant colors of the houses perched on the cliffs.
A day trip from Genoa would allow you to explore one or two of the towns and perhaps hike a portion of the trails. However, it's important to note that the hikes can be challenging and may require more time than a single day permits.
Saving Cinque Terre for Lucca
If you have the opportunity to visit Lucca during your Italian adventure, it might be worthwhile to save the Cinque Terre experience for that leg of your journey. Lucca is located closer to Cinque Terre, approximately 60 kilometers away, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.
By staying in Lucca or one of the nearby towns, you'll have more time to fully immerse yourself in the charm of Cinque Terre. You can plan multiple days to hike between the villages, take in the breathtaking scenery, and savor the local cuisine and wine without feeling rushed.
Additionally, Lucca itself is a delightful city with a well-preserved Renaissance-era historic center, surrounded by impressive Renaissance walls. You can explore the city's charming streets, visit its churches and museums, and enjoy the vibrant local culture.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the decision to visit Cinque Terre as a day trip from Genoa or save it for when you're in Lucca depends on your travel itinerary, available time, and personal preferences. If you're short on time or Cinque Terre is a must-see on your list, a day trip from Genoa can provide a taste of this incredible region. However, if you have the flexibility, staying in Lucca or nearby can offer a more immersive and leisurely experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty and unique character of the Cinque Terre villages.
