Does anyone know how to get your best value for your airmiles? I imagine there is an optimal distance. I am interested in flying to destinations in BC, Eastern Canada, Africa, South America, Europe, etc.

The best value for your airmiles is flying in BC. Flights are expensive, but you don't need lots of airmiles. I flew to Haida Gwai for 815 miles; depending if you have gold status.

I know for me, I like to pick destinations where you typically won't ever find a good deal to, but yet still want to visit. Flights within Canada would be a good bet, especially to places only served by one airline.

flyertalk.com is a great resource for all things travel. The best value for points depends on the airline you have points on. Skyteam, Oneworld and Star Alliance all have round the world tickets. One time I used American Airline miles good for 50,000 miles of travel on Oneworld airlines for 160,000 miles. That was one of the best bargains ever.

Getting the Best Value for Your Airmiles

Introduction

Airmiles can be a great way to save on travel expenses, but knowing how to get the best value for your miles can be a challenge. The optimal distance for redeeming your airmiles will depend on various factors, including your travel destination, the airline's award chart, and your travel preferences.

Factors to Consider

Travel Destination

The destination you choose can significantly impact the value you get from your airmiles. Generally, shorter flights within North America tend to provide better value per mile, while longer international flights can be more expensive in terms of miles required. However, this can vary depending on the airline and route.

Airline's Award Chart

Each airline has its own award chart, which determines the number of miles required for different routes and cabin classes. It's essential to familiarize yourself with your preferred airline's award chart to maximize the value of your miles. Some airlines may offer better deals for certain destinations or travel periods.

Travel Preferences

Your travel preferences, such as cabin class, stopover options, and travel dates, can also impact the value you get from your airmiles. Generally, economy class tickets tend to provide better value, while business or first-class tickets require significantly more miles. Additionally, being flexible with travel dates can help you find better deals.

Suggested Destinations

Based on your interest in destinations in BC, Eastern Canada, Africa, South America, and Europe, here are some suggestions for getting the best value for your airmiles:

  • BC and Eastern Canada: Short-haul flights within Canada can often provide excellent value for your airmiles. Consider destinations like Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, or Montreal.
  • Africa: While long-haul flights to Africa can be expensive in terms of miles, some airlines offer better deals for certain routes or travel periods. Consider destinations like Nairobi, Cape Town, or Marrakesh.
  • South America: Flights to destinations like Lima, Bogota, or Rio de Janeiro can provide good value, especially during off-peak travel seasons.
  • Europe: Flights to major European cities like London, Paris, or Rome can be reasonably priced with airmiles, particularly during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall).

Conclusion

Getting the best value for your airmiles requires careful planning and research. Consider your travel destinations, airline award charts, and personal preferences. Be flexible with travel dates and explore various routes and stopover options. By maximizing the value of your airmiles, you can enjoy more travel experiences without breaking the bank.
