Going to Japan soon, just wondering where is the best place to exchange money? Is it better to do it in Canada or in Japan (Osaka). Thanks.

When I went to Kyoto/Osaka in 2012 it was cheaper to exchange here.
I'm going to Tokyo in the spring, so I've been keeping an eye on the rates. It's been kind of shitty lately, CAD is only worth about 76¢ on the dollar (or more correctly, on the yen). If you find a rate a few cents better than that, take it!

ETA: to be more clear, right now 100 yen will set you back $1.30. If you can find it closer to $1.20 that is really good.

On a trip earlier this year, I just used ATM machines to withdraw money as I needed it and that seemed to work OK in terms of the exchange rate.

We went in Jan and it was way easier just to use the atms there and the exchange was just as good

I agree atms are a good way to go, and also just using visa. I used a credit union card in their atms.

ATMs are the easiest, I never take any here just stop at the airport take some there and then as needed. ATMs are everywhere

We went in August and just used ATMs. Seven Eleven stores have ATMs that accept foreign cards. We bank with CIBC. We used credit cards occasionally.

ATMS there were great

I did mine at the bank and it wasn't outrageous, I exchanged $1900 CAD and got $150000 YEN for approx. $50.
IF you haven't gone yet, I have some leftover I would be willing to sell for market value. Win win, no loss on exchange for you or me. (36000 Yen is what I have still)

Next best thing after ATMs: hot canned coffee from vending machines.

Best Place to Exchange Money for Japan Trip

If you're planning a trip to Japan, specifically to Osaka, you might be wondering where the best place is to exchange your Canadian dollars for Japanese yen. There are a few factors to consider when deciding whether to exchange money in Canada or in Japan.

Exchanging Money in Canada

Exchanging money in Canada before your trip can be convenient, especially if you want to have some Japanese yen on hand when you arrive. However, it's important to note that the exchange rates offered by banks and currency exchange services in Canada may not be as favorable as the rates you'll find in Japan.

Additionally, many banks and currency exchange services charge fees for exchanging money, which can add up depending on the amount you're exchanging. If you choose to exchange money in Canada, it's advisable to shop around and compare rates and fees from different providers to get the best deal.

Exchanging Money in Japan (Osaka)

Exchanging money in Japan, specifically in Osaka, can be a more cost-effective option for several reasons:

  1. Competitive Exchange Rates: Japan is a major financial hub, and the exchange rates offered in the country tend to be more favorable than those in other countries. This is especially true in major cities like Osaka, where there is a high demand for foreign currency exchange.
  2. Fewer Fees: Many money exchange counters and services in Japan charge minimal or no fees for exchanging foreign currency, making it a more economical option than exchanging money in Canada.
  3. Convenience: You can easily find money exchange counters and services at airports, train stations, and major tourist areas in Osaka. This makes it convenient to exchange money upon arrival or as needed during your trip.

However, it's important to note that you should only exchange money at reputable and licensed money exchange counters or services. Avoid exchanging money on the street or with unauthorized individuals, as this can be risky and may result in unfavorable rates or even scams.

Conclusion

While exchanging money in Canada before your trip can be convenient, it may not be the most cost-effective option. Exchanging money in Japan, specifically in Osaka, can often provide better exchange rates and lower fees, making it a more economical choice. However, it's always a good idea to research and compare rates and fees from different providers before exchanging your money.
