If you are able to fly to Sapporo, they have their amazing snow festival down town usually the first week or two of February. You can look it up. Definitely worth it if you are able to fly there.

My favourite experience in Japan is going to the Onsen where you are able to wear a yukata and relax in the hot springs. Surely there will be one in the ski resort you are going to but there will be many to choose from in your travels. You can eat, rest, soak and enjoy there and is a very cultural experience! Enjoy!

Thank you Skye. This is absolutely something we will try to do.

Japan Trip: Skiing in Hakuba and Sightseeing in Tokyo
Heading to Japan in mid-January for a month-long adventure? Sounds like an incredible trip! As first-timers, you're in for a treat. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your time in Hakuba Valley and Tokyo.
Hakuba Valley: The Ski Haven
For the skiing portion of your trip, Hakuba Valley is an excellent choice. With its world-class terrain and stunning alpine scenery, it's a paradise for intermediate and advanced skiers. Here are a few tips:
- Accommodation: Consider staying in Hakuba Village, which is centrally located and offers easy access to multiple ski resorts. The Hakuba Valley Hotel or Hakuba Mominoki Hotel are great options with convenient ski shuttle services.
- Mountain: If you love glade runs, Happo-One Resort should be your primary focus. It boasts some of the best tree runs in the region, with a good mix of groomers and ungroomed terrain. Cortina Resort and Tsugaike Kogen are also worth exploring for their diverse terrain.
- Après Scene: After a day on the slopes, Hakuba Village offers a lively après scene. Check out spots like the Hakuba Base Café or Wingnut for a post-ski drink and socializing.
Tokyo: Sightseeing, Food, and Culture
The second half of your trip promises to be equally exciting as you immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and cuisine of Tokyo. Here are some suggestions:
- Accommodation: For easy access to major attractions, consider staying in central areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ginza. The Tokyo Station area is also convenient if you plan to take day trips.
- Sightseeing: Don't miss iconic sites like the Sensoji Temple, Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace, and the bustling Shibuya Crossing. Take a day trip to Mount Fuji or explore the charming Asakusa neighborhood.
- Food: Tokyo is a culinary mecca. From Michelin-starred restaurants to humble ramen joints, there's something for every taste and budget. Explore the city's diverse neighborhoods for authentic local cuisine.
- Culture: Immerse yourself in traditional Japanese experiences like a tea ceremony, kabuki performance, or sumo wrestling tournament (if you're visiting during the right season).
No matter where your adventures take you, Japan promises to be a memorable and enriching experience. Embrace the unique blend of modern and traditional, and soak in every moment of this incredible journey.
Safe travels and enjoy your time in Japan!

Two first timers headed to Japan for a month mid-January. First part of our trip will be a few days of skiing in Hakuba Valley. Both of us are intermediate/advanced skiers and love glade runs. We also enjoy the apres scene. Rest of the trip will be full of sightseeing, food eating and culture appreciation all throughout but Tokyo especially. Hoping to hear from the wonderful YVRdeals community any recommendations for where to stay in Hakuba and which mountain to focus on. Las… See more
