We had a full day layover in September on route to Peru. Very easy to get to the historical area. Very safe and lots to see. Can easily spend a day. Taxi there was about 220pesos but there is a shuttle that was simple also. Then about 90pesos back. It’s very pedestrian friendly and there are maps everywhere.

awesome thanks Kathleen!

Candice Cazal Gulkiewich I have the same advice as the post above. Have fun!

We just got back from one day layover. Catching the bus from airport is the best. We would’ve had to wait an hour for a taxi. We also just hopped on one of the tour buses. $20 American you can hop on and off all day long. They take you to all those places you want to see.
Candice
great info! Thank you
My sister took the train and said it was not such a great expereince so I was wondering about the buses!
James
Candice Cazal Gulkiewich bus was fine. You can download Mexico City on to your Google map. Then you don’t need to use any of your data and it works fine. I also used uber to get back out there to the airport. You think you have a lot of time. But you really don’t there’s so much to see. Oh yeah the one thing with the bus. You need to buy a card just outside the entrance to the airport. And load it with pesos. It was 70 I believe.
Candice
that actually sounds super convenient! and Yay! thats so good to hear. I am excited for all the different optioNs!

Or you can go to the pyramids and Island of Dolls! We are there one day in December and cant wait to visit both places:D
Candice
island of dolls! awesome!!
Katherin
Candice Cazal Gulkiewich Yes, you have no idea how excited I am. Grab a locker at the airport for your bags, contact an uber and head over to the canals. Just make sure you get a a boat guide to the tour to the "real" Island of Dolls, its about 2 hours down the canals Im told. I have heard there are some fake ones set up along the way. Its a bit pricey, but I think it's well worth it for the experience and time they are taking for you... and if you can find a couple of people to share the cost when your down there, that would be a bonus. This would take up 4 to 5 hours of your day, plus travel time so make sure you factor that in:)
Candice
Totally doabel within our timeframe. Allthough, I just checked out those pyramids and those look pretty stellar too!
Katherin
Candice Cazal Gulkiewich We are heading to pyramids at 7 am, and by 9 isa will be heading to the canals and will do both. We leave on a bus out of mexico city at 8 PM that night so it will be a long day but we can definitely do both! Something to consider for sure:) have fun...my count down is on. 10 days! lol
Candice
Katherine Ann Meadows awesome! I hope you have the best time ever!!
Katherin
Candice Cazal Gulkiewich you too! Peru will be amazing also. It's something Im looking at very soon!

I've had 6 layovers in Mexico City this year (ranging from 2 to 19 hours) and went into the city for all but the shortest layover. There are a couple of free walking tours that I enjoyed (Mexico a Pie (foot) and Estacion Mexico were two of the operators) that can give a good overview of the central area and Coyocan. Ciudadela Market was my favourite market (the one surrounding the Merced metro stop is chaotic at best and I can't recommend it). Make sure you don't flash valuables (especially if you take the metro) as Mexico City has many rough areas and an enormous rich-poor divide.
Candice
awesome suggestions, thank you Kenneth!
Jocelyn
The modern art museum is gorgeous and world famous. And close to downtown.
Candice
awesome, thank you!!

Check out free tours. I did one in the historic district. The guides was very knowledgeable. Mexico city has over 240 museums and galleries to choose from. Just hope your day isn't a Monday as almost everything thing is closed.

Exploring Mexico City: A Whirlwind Adventure
Mexico City, a vibrant metropolis bursting with culture, history, and culinary delights, is an incredible destination even for a short layover. With just one full day and one overnight stay, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the city's vibrant essence and create unforgettable memories.
Day 1: Dive into Mexico City's Rich History
Start your day early and head to the iconic Zócalo, the main square and the heart of the city. Marvel at the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, both architectural wonders that stand as testaments to Mexico's colonial past.
From there, venture into the Templo Mayor, an ancient Aztec temple complex that offers a fascinating glimpse into the pre-Hispanic civilizations that once thrived in the region. Explore the museum and marvel at the intricate artifacts and ruins that have been meticulously preserved.
After a morning of historical exploration, indulge in some authentic Mexican cuisine. Head to one of the city's renowned markets, such as the Mercado de San Juan or La Merced, where you can sample mouthwatering street food and experience the vibrant culinary scene firsthand.
Evening: Immerse Yourself in Mexico City's Lively Culture
As the evening approaches, make your way to the trendy neighborhoods of Roma or Condesa. These vibrant areas are brimming with charming cafés, quirky boutiques, and lively street art. Stroll along the tree-lined avenues, soak in the bohemian atmosphere, and perhaps enjoy a refreshing mezcal or tequila cocktail at one of the hip bars.
If you're in the mood for a cultural experience, consider attending a performance at the iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes, a stunning art nouveau building that hosts world-class concerts, dance performances, and exhibitions.
Day 2: A Glimpse of Mexico City's Neighborhoods
On your second day, before catching your flight to Peru, explore one of Mexico City's distinct neighborhoods. Head to Coyoacán, a charming area known for its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and lively plazas. Wander through the vibrant markets, visit the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul), and soak in the local atmosphere.
Alternatively, venture to Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its colorful canals and floating gardens. Take a trajinera (traditional boat) ride and witness the unique way of life that has been preserved in this area for centuries.
No matter how you choose to spend your brief time in Mexico City, you'll be enchanted by its rich tapestry of history, culture, and culinary delights. Embrace the city's energy, savor the flavors, and create lasting memories that will inspire you to return for a longer stay in the future.
