We reserved a pocket WiFi from econnect japan. It was great, picked up at airport, came with a return envelop for you to drop off at any post box. Relied on it for Google map directions and train times. Must see... Depends on your interests. Meiji Shrine and grounds, a lovely and Zen experience in the morning. Senso-ji in Asakusa is much busier. Shinjuku for a taste of bustling city. Roppongi Hills has a observation tower for views of Tokyo. Check out any large department stores' lower level for the most amazing prepared foods - you can buy to go and some of these stores have rooftop gardens that you can "picnic'.

Reserved a pocket wifi when we booked our rail pass. Picked it up at the airport, worked like a charm.

Planning a trip to Japan combining the bustling metropolis of Tokyo and the serene Kumano Kudo pilgrimage trail can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your journey.
Must-See and Do in Tokyo
- Sensoji Temple: This iconic Buddhist temple in Asakusa is a must-visit for its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and traditional Japanese architecture.
- Shibuya Crossing: Experience the famous scramble crossing, where pedestrians from all directions cross at once, creating a mesmerizing urban spectacle.
- Tsukiji Fish Market: Explore one of the world's largest and most renowned fish markets, where you can witness the frenetic tuna auctions and savor fresh sushi.
- Imperial Palace: Stroll through the beautiful gardens and grounds surrounding the residence of the Japanese Imperial Family.
- Robot Restaurant: For a unique and quirky experience, catch a show at the Robot Restaurant, featuring dazzling displays of neon lights, robots, and performers.
Best Onsen Accommodation along the Kumano Kudo Trail
The Kumano Kudo pilgrimage trail offers several opportunities to experience traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring) accommodations. Here are a few recommended options:
- Yunomine Onsen: Located in Wakayama Prefecture, this historic onsen village is home to several ryokans (traditional inns) with natural hot spring baths.
- Katsuura Onsen: This coastal onsen town in Wakayama Prefecture offers ryokans with stunning ocean views and rejuvenating hot spring facilities.
- Kawayu Onsen: Situated along the Kumano Kudo trail, this picturesque onsen village in Mie Prefecture is known for its charming ryokans and outdoor rotenburo (open-air hot spring baths).
Rental Car and Driving in Japan
Driving in Japan can be a convenient way to explore the Kumano Kudo pilgrimage trail and surrounding areas. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Obtain an International Driving Permit: While not always strictly required, an International Driving Permit can help avoid any potential issues with rental companies or local authorities.
- Familiarize yourself with Japanese traffic rules: Japanese traffic rules may differ from what you're accustomed to, so it's important to research and understand them before you drive.
- Consider an ETC card: An ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) card can make toll road payments easier and more convenient.
- Use a GPS navigation system: While Google Maps can be helpful, a dedicated GPS navigation system or a rental car with built-in navigation can make driving in Japan much smoother.
