Where should we rent in Mexico for 3-4 months in the winter?

Question:

My husband and I are newly retired. We are interested in renting in Mexico for 3-4 months in the winter. We are open to trying different areas. Do we need a different real estate agent for each area? We would like within walking distance to the beach and a good gym. Just starting this search so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

We used vrbo. You can usually get a good rate for long term rentals.

Roughly what do you pay per month?

We had a large rental for 2 family’s right on the beach just outside of cancun. It had a gym right on property. We paid $4000 month.

We would highly recommend Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. We have spent multiple years there on extended stays. Easy access on direct flights from Calgary to Huatulco. No large all-inclusive hotels, has a Chedraui grocery store, restaurants, great beaches. We walk everywhere and feel safe.

Oh, and there is a great small group gym right near where we stay. And a last minute cancellation in January for rental in the six-plex that we stay...

For sure check out the Lake Chapala area, 45 minutes from Guadalajara. Has one of the largest expat populations in the world, including thousands of Canadians and Americans. We lived there for a couple of years after we retired and the year round weather is almost perfect. Good luck!

Safest place is the Mayan Rivera, I fully recomend Merida, Yucatan. The city is inland but...is beautiful surrounded by Mayan ruins and cenotes, ocean is 30-45 min. From the city. Check trip advisor. Mazatlan/Cabos weather is cool at night and ocean water is not that warm (ocean and Winter weather better temperatures from Nayarit down south
), safety wise Mazatlan not that safe. Good luck in your search. Enjoy my country

My Mom and Dad have owned a large two story condo in Manzanillo (just outside actually, in Santiago) for about 6 years now, they love it there! They feel very safe. There are many ex-pat friends they have made down there. They are actually down there right now
When we were there, we purchased short term gym memberships for my husband and my boys (hockey players) at Gold's Gym in Manzanillo, it was really nice with a pool as well. There are many wonderful restaurants to try out and places nearby to explore
Best of luck in finding your special place in Mexico!

Puerto escondido! Safe. Don’t need a car. Walk everywhere or taxi is a couple bucks. Great gym run by a young guy from San Diego plus excellent yoga and Pilates classes. He runs various classes out of the gym
Mike's Fitness. And it never rain. Like never. And direct flight from Calgary to Hualtulco then 1.5 hr bus ride from hualtulco. Contact me if you want more info. Main draw for us - less tourists more local culture. Like the Mayan 30 yrs ago. It’s quaint but still lots to do.

Presently sitting on the balcony of a lovely condo at Club la Costa in San Jose del Cabos, on a golf course, that we found on vrbo. We are here for 5 months and have found mostly Canadians in this gated community which is a 5 minute walk to a great gym and a 10 minute walk to the beach. We are able to walk for groceries and for a larger run take a taxi back for $7.00. Buses run for 25 pesos for a couple all around San Jose. For a little more you can catch a bus to Cabos san Lucas and enjoy touring around there. Wishing you all the best.

Finding Your Perfect Winter Rental in Mexico

Congratulations on your retirement! Spending the winter months in Mexico is an excellent choice for retirees seeking warm weather, beautiful beaches, and an affordable cost of living. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect rental for your needs.

Real Estate Agents

While it's not strictly necessary to work with a different real estate agent for each area you're considering, it can be beneficial. Local agents have in-depth knowledge of their specific region, including neighborhoods, amenities, and rental rates. They can provide valuable insights and help you navigate the rental process more smoothly.

However, if you prefer working with a single agent, look for one who specializes in multiple areas of interest or is part of a larger agency with offices in various locations. This way, they can leverage their network and resources to assist you in your search across different regions.

Beach and Gym Access

Given your preference for being within walking distance to the beach and a good gym, you'll want to focus your search on beachfront communities or those in close proximity to the coastline. Many popular tourist destinations in Mexico, such as Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and Los Cabos, offer plenty of rental options that meet these criteria.

When evaluating potential rentals, pay close attention to the distance to the beach and the quality of nearby gyms or fitness centers. Some communities may have on-site gym facilities or offer discounted rates at local gyms, which can be a significant advantage.

Additional Considerations

  • Safety: Research the safety and security of the areas you're considering, and choose neighborhoods with a good reputation and low crime rates.
  • Amenities: Determine what other amenities are important to you, such as proximity to restaurants, shopping, medical facilities, and entertainment options.
  • Budget: Set a realistic budget for your rental and factor in additional costs like utilities, Internet, and transportation.
  • Length of Stay: Some landlords may offer discounted rates for longer stays, so be sure to inquire about that if you plan to rent for an extended period.

Remember, the key to finding the perfect winter rental in Mexico is to start your search early, communicate your preferences clearly, and work with knowledgeable real estate professionals who can guide you through the process.

Enjoy your retirement and your time in Mexico!
