Should I prepay for a car rental to get a discount?

We have found some great airbnb in Halifax. Also some nice downtown hotels, older and so interesting. Not your chain places. We have had bad experience with car rental in Halifax airport. Our flight was delayed leaving TO and we called the rental place to let them know that we would not be arriving until after midnight. By the time we arrived, the car rental place was empty, cold and deserted. There was an employee of a different car rental place still there that was able to help us. We were truly stuck, in an ice storm, no car and the middle of the night! The other people did get us a car, but charged extra for snow tires (which are mandatory!) and because we hadn't reserved in advance, it was very expensive - more than our airfare for 4 nights! We of course complained to the company who, over the phone, promised to pay us the difference - but that never happened and it was well over $500. Just be careful and I hope your flight arrives on time.

Marilyn check out the Muir hotel! It’s brand new and quite fancy

We enjoyed the Cambridge Suites, which are centrally located. For something more unique, the Garden South Park Inn is also in a good location. If you're planning to spend most of your time in Halifax, you might not need a car. The city is walkable (if you're reasonably fit), and has decent bus service.

Karleen i was wondering that! i cd maybe rent one for a day or two should we decide to venture out

Karleen I highly recommend trying to explore if you can outside of the downtown area. There are amazing beaches in the South shore.

Linda .. Peggy’s Cove, Carter’s Beach which has white sand,Bay of Fundy wineries in Annapolis valley. It really depends what your interests are.
Linda
those, are my interests, lol thank you SO much - other than not travelling to cabot trail - that is the next trip

Barrington Hotel and The Prince George are both downtown. Prince George is nicer option and next to Argyle St for food and drinks, a block away from Citadell Hill, and only a few blocks of a downhill walk to the waterfront
Linda
Thank you!
much appreciated!

I grew up in Halifax and still go back a few times per year to see my siblings and family. I made a few google lists and to do lists for friends visiting:

We enjoyed our stay at The Hollis, even though we were barely there!

Where to Stay in Halifax and Car Rental Prepayment
Congratulations on booking your nonstop flights to Halifax! It's always exciting to plan a trip to a new destination. As for where to stay in Halifax, here are a few recommendations:
1. Downtown Halifax
If you want to be in the heart of the action, staying downtown is a great option. You'll be close to restaurants, shops, and attractions like the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk.
2. North End Halifax
The North End is a trendy and up-and-coming neighborhood with great cafes, boutiques, and art galleries. It's a bit quieter than downtown but still close to everything.
3. Dartmouth
If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, consider staying across the harbor in Dartmouth. You'll have great views of Halifax and easy access via the ferry.
As for renting a car through Hertz, it's becoming more common for rental car companies to ask for prepayment for a discount. This helps them secure bookings and reduce last-minute cancellations. As long as the prepayment is refundable if you cancel within 48 hours, it can be a good way to save some money on your rental.
Enjoy your trip to Halifax and happy travels!

I managed to book the Halifax deal nonstop both ways - YVR -YHZ return at beginning of April.
ANY recommendations on where to stay?
I will be renting a car through Hertz from airport. They ask for prepayment for a (roughly $150) discount cancellable 48 hours in advance … is this now the common thing to do?
thank you
