What are the must-see attractions on Hawaii's Big Island in February?

Question:

Hi everyone,
I'm planning on going to Hawaii, big island in February. Any recommendations on hotel, what to see and where to eat? Safe beaches for kids? I've heard of the observatory and am planning to go there star gazing one night. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

We stayed here https://extraadventure.trvl.com/hotel/kona-seaside-hotel/pTpAFphjqiC8IsO3?checkin=2017-11-25&checkout=2017-11-26&rooms=&adults=&children= and loved it. It was by far the cheapest and best located hotel in the area. Highly recommend doing the beer tour and eating at Kona Brewing Company. Splashers is also good eats and there are many restaurants within five minutes walk that have specialty cocktails especially the Bloody Mary for breakfast. There is a small beach right next-door that is great for kids. If you are renting a car you can explore many other beaches all around the island.

I would also recommend the manta ray snorkel or dive.

In February you should see them. There are more at the site near the airport than the one at the Sheraton. That will make sense once you get there lol!

We were there in March and saw lots by the Sheraton.

Kahaaluu in Kona for snorkeling. Great for kids. A bay is also a nice protected beach and hapuna beach is a must see.
We stayed in condo in waiakaloa and loved it.

White sands beach is right on Ali'i drive. Can get pretty rough, but it's nice. We rented a vrbo at the Banyan Tree on Ali'i drive. It is AMAZING. Been back 2 more times, and it never disappoints!
The observatory was awesome. It was 27 above, and dropped to 0 at the top! Lol
Hapuna beach is about 15-20 min away from Kona, but it is gorgeous. There are SO many things to do on the big island. I suggest buying "The Big Island Revealed". It is a great book with loads of places to eat and visit!
Huggo's was so fun for the kids to eat at. Right on the beach in the sand. Had a hula dancer that got the kids involved!

If you go to the observatory on Mauna Kea take a jacket. It gets cold at night. But if you're going to the top of Mauna Kea where the international observatories are bring a winter jacket and don't try to move too fast. Lack of oxygen up there will have you dizzy extremely fast.

Thanks for the advice! Will make sure to bring along winter jackets.

Chose to watch either sunset or sunrise. Spectacular. At the top you will be at an altitude higher than the FAA allows small planes to fly.

Heads up! Young children are usually not allowed to go up on the observatory tour (most tour operators) due to elevation sickness. They will take children, but not to the very top.

Good to know that!
Thanks for the heads up.

We have been to Kona many times. We stay at The Kona Islander Inn. It's not fancy, but it's walking distance to the farmers market and downtown Kona (Alii drive) Bubba Gump is across the street. It has a pool & hot tub, BBQ area etc.

Krista My husband and I got married there in 2011. We stayed 2 nights. Check in staff was unbelievably welcoming, the room was beautiful, the restaurants had the tastiest food, beach and grounds were impeccable... I would stay there again in a heartbeat. I would say it is best suited for a romantic getaway, rather than a family vacation. No code, sorry!

Do not drive up to the observatory after scuba diving. You will regret it. #protips
