I highly recommend the hop on hop off to orient yourself within the city and know how far apart things are.
-Radio City - go if you can - huge place!
-Eataly in the Flatiron District is the best!
Trish
Also - money saver... go up to the Rainbow Room (free elevator) for a drink if you don’t want to pay to go up the Rockefeller Centre elevetator...

If you are taking the subway download the app ‘citymapper’ it tells you which trains to get on and when the trains are arriving and it helped me so much in New York! Also Aladdin on Broadway was amazing, sometimes they do discounted tickets for that show so keep your eye open the day of on TKTS on the square as I got my tickets for 30% off regular price because i went to purchase there. Go to Empire State Building at night and the top of the rock during the day. Also Joes pizza is really good. Central Park is so so nice but really big so make sure you carve out a couple hours to have time to explore everything!

If you like theatre, you MUST see a Broadway show.
If you like art/architecture go to the Cloisters.
If you want a quintessential NY moment, go to the Strawberry Fields part of Central Park...it’s dedicated to John Lennon and across from the Dakota where he lived and breathed his last breath. There are often musicians jamming Lennon & Beatles songs. The vibe is worth more than a New York minute.
Liz
Ground Zero - great opportunity to reflect on the events that occurred, and how one's life is precious.
Yvonne
New York pass is well worth it. Do Top of the Rock and Empire State but one day and one night.
Dani
I lived there for a few years albeit it was almost 15 years ago, so there are probably some other cool places to go also. Here are my favorites:
- Central Park for sure, just go get lost in it. The promenade is iconic; and the botanical gardens on the north end of the park are stunning.
-Bronx zoo is always a good time
-Top of the Rock or Empire State building at night is a super cool way to see the city
-Last minute Broadway tickets, you can buy them the morning of in Times Square, often cheaper that way.
- if you're there on a Saturday, check out the street markets that are in various places across the city.
-Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is beautiful if it's not too hot
-Shake Shack in Madison Sq Park for delicious hamburgers
-Momofuku if you like ramen and bao
-shopping in Greenwich Village and SoHo
-Village Vanguard if you like Jazz is a classic Jazz club with an amazing vibe to it
-As mentioned the Staten Island Ferry is a good way to see the Statue of Liberty if you don't want to pay for a tour to the island.
-Circle Line tours are really beautiful way to see the city from the water
-Get a slice of pizza (fold it in half length-wise to eat it) from a hole in a wall place and a hotdog from a street vendor
-5th Ave if you want a fancy shopping experience.
-The Metropolitan museum of art or Museum of Modern Art.

“Free tours on foot” is a great way to see areas and try out some great food. Sylvia’s diner in Harlem is fantastic and it put you in a great area.
Pamela
Look up Free Walking Tours. We took two of them and they were wonderful. Walk around in Central Park. Much to see there.
Blaine
Good food everywhere! Katz's Delicatessen is an institution not to be avoided.
Any pizza you have will be better than our own best pizza - even little hole-in-the-wall spots beside the high traffic touristy areas. Try, though, to seek out local recommendations.
If your budget (and schedule) allows, I'd highly recommend going into Brooklyn and visiting Peter Luger's steakhouse. I normally never recommend steak anywhere outside Alberta, but they really do something special there.

Lots of great suggestions so far. Don't forget to go to the top of the Empire State Building,. Also you should visit the World Trade Center memorial site. Some other things : take in a Broadway show; try to get on SNL or any of the talk shows; visit the Radio City Music Hall; take a tour of Grand Central Station; ; eat at the amazing food carts in Times Square; use the NYC subway system; catch a Yankees or Rangers game; and definitely visit Central Park.
Cindy
City Pass was awesome...purchase at Costco. Ellen's Starlight Dinner. Check out Travelzoo or Groupon before leaving for some great deals(we got a great deal on a helicopter tour of NYC this way). Get a weeklong subway pass...super easy to use. Some museums are "Pay what you can" so you don't have to pay the posted price. We did the 911 Tribute Centre, not the museum and it was AMAZING!!!! A volunteer that was somehow affected or involved in 911 walks you around the area telling you their personal story as well as painting out the features and details (It was included in the City Pass). Try for some TV tickets (all are free)...we went to Live with Kelly and Ryan. Tickets On the Square for cheaper broadway shows. Sit at the bar for happy hour... New Yorkers were awesome and shared their knowledge happily. The only thing we din't get to was walking the Highline...hear it's a must do. Gotham Comedy Club was great!! Two SNL performed the night we went and Trevor Noah happened to "pop in" unscheduled, which apparently happens a lot. Enjoy!!!! Love NYC!!

I would recommend buying the New York Pass. You can see so many attractions for one price. https://www.newyorkpass.com/
Joanne
Don’t ignore Central Park. Rent a bike nearby and make a memory
Susan
Go for a walk in Soho - look in at the shops, walk through Little Italy and grab a bite at King Wok. I'd be willing to bet you leave feeling like a New Yorker.
Rebecca
Empire State Building
Grand Central Station
Wall Street.
See a show at Broadway. We chose King Kong when we where there in May and it was amazing.
Staten Island Ferry-Free and you get to go past the Statue of Liberty
Central Park
National History Museum
World Trade Centre Memorial site.
I think this was everything that we done while we where there in May.
Walk don’t take a taxi as they take longer, the sub is your best friend too.
We stayed at the Intercontiental and we where very central to everything. The sub station was there as soon as we walked out of our hotel.
. Have fun.

Unless you are interested in Ellis Island, I would skip the Statue of Liberty island. Pick a cruise instead that will take you close to the island. The security and the lines are ridiculous. We had a pass that we thought would allow us to at least skip the ticket line, but no, they made us line up for tickets too, so we decided it was not worth it.
The High Line is a must. You get to take a long walk in NYC without having to worry about cars etc.

World trade memorial is awe inspiring, Central Park, views are better from Rockefeller centre than Empire State,
Donna
Times Square, carriage ride Central park, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, statue of Liberty and of course Empire State Building (be there at opening to avoid endless long lines)
Magharit
it’s worth the extra money to buy the advance ‘front of the line’ pass. Time is money. Especially when you’re in a city where you want to do lots.
Linda
I won’t recommend a place but just a warning. We used the hop off hop on bus and stopped at the ground zero memorial etc. We were there for 2-3 hours. It was excellent but not a wise idea to use our pass for that day as we spent so much time in the museum we didn’t see too much else.
Robbin
Do you like shopping? My daughter did a shopping tour; groups of 6-12 people. They take you to the garment district of up n comer designers!!! Jewelry, handbags, clothing. She got some great pieces.
Rod
I will also suggest the New York City pass. Great value if you are going hard. Book a circle like sunset tour. And of course the hop on/hop off. If you only go to the top of one building I’d suggest the top of the rock. Great view of Central Park and the Empire State Building.
Robbin
NY (Manhattan) is a great walking City. We walked The Brooklyn Bridge, all through Tribeca, Soho (skip China Town) Brandt Park, Times Square, Central Park!!! We bumped into an OmaZing cupcake place, it’s mentioned in a White Stripe song ? Magnolia bakery
. Get your metro pass and go!! NYC is OmaZing
Robbin
Carnegie Hall
Barbara
Don't forget the MOMA, Eataly, an NYC food tour SO worth it!
Marnie
