You could take a day trip to Cinqueterre if you don’t want to spend a night or two there. Drive to Levanto and take the train all the way to Riomaggiore. Then you can choose how many legs you want to hike vs take the train on the way back to your car. We hiked the first and third (took the train between the rest of the towns) but we took it easy. We made it back to our hotel south of Siena by 10 pm.

San Gimignano is a stunning hill lown with medieval towers and stunning views across the countryside. Very busy, though. Great gelato in the town square. We stayed a few nights in Volterra, a much less touristy hill town - old Etruscan town - known for alabaster. Pleasant walled town. Of course, from Siena you can do day trips to Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre and other Tuscan areas. Some nice wine tours are offered.

I loved Volterra and San Gimignano. All of it!! Renting a car is perfect because the rolling hills and valleys is an idyllic drive.

Montepulciano is a beautiful place too. So many wonderful towns. We stayed outside Sienna in Costello de Quatre Torre. Volterra, San Gimignano, FLORENCE, Chianti and so much more.

Trudy we loved Montepulciano. Stayed right off the main square up on the top. Had a vehicle (too big for many streets throughout Tuscany so be prepared to walk). Set the GPS to “avoid toll roads” and let it Guide you through the countryside from one destination to the other. We found so many quite gems that way it became our favourite pastime.
