I was in Singapore last October and stayed on the edge of China Town with a reasonable rate. Go elsewhere and you will spend a bucket load of cash. This area was a super convenient area where you can walk to a number of places.
I'm not an big fan of the jump on/off buses. Did this in Singapore as I sprained my ankle. Bus tour was awesome. Worth the money. Eat like a local at the Hawker stations. Good way to save money as well.

You can pretty much stay anywhere coz it’s so safe, choose an Airbnb close to a MRT station for convenience. Go to Sentosa...it’s a little island off Singapore with lots of activities - aquarium, rides, fountain show, beaches, Universal Studios.

Both Westin Singapore and Pan Pacific Singapore were fantastic. The Pan Pacific is closer to the marina area for walking in the evening.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Atrium a few years ago and found it to be good value. Not cheap, but under $200 for three of us. Included a great breakfast that set us up for most of the day. The zoo is very good, as are the Botanical Gardens. Little India was a great place to eat.
