If you go at Mardi Gras that is busy and crazy time and It is not safe to do things without knowing where you are going. I have traveled there three times alone one of them and always watch my back.

I looooooooove New Orleans. I was there in late October and it was hot and sunny, so January would probably be good. You don't need to rent a car. If you stay in the Garden District or Treme you can walk to the French Quarter or take the St. Charles Streetcar. The French Quarter is an absolute zoo at all hours so don't stay there is you want to get any sleep.
Crystal
No need for a car. Walk, take the street cars, or uber. January is a good time as it isn’t too humid. There are so many good hotels but I recommend staying outside of the French quarter. I’ve stayed at the intercontinental and the Q&C and both are great location-wise.
