I stayed at a ryokan in Okayama once and it was a beautiful area. Okayama castle was also nice, but not compared to Osaka or Himeji.

Korakuen is probably the best landscape garden in Japan. Take a side trip to nearby Kurashiki - really nice walk along the canal.

Okayama , is home to the famous folk hero "Momotaro (Peach boy) and they even have a statue outside the JR station of him. I stayed at a hostel called "Kamp" in Okayama. It was my first experience in a hostel and I loved it! It is about a 10 minute walk from the JR station and hidden in an outside market area. Due to the weather I did't get to go to "Naoshima" a contemporary art island but def think you should go if you are planning a trip!
