Thanks for the feedback so far! I'm 29, just love immersing myself in new cultures and learning the history. Things like architecture, nature, museums, food/wine, sporting events are all appealing to me. I see a deal on here for Portugal, any thoughts?
Tee
lego Barcelona or Greece Nathan hah

Argentina! Flight is expensive but if you bring American you can exchange them at a higher than official rate. Look into it. My hostel did it at 10 to 1 but other places did it at up to 12 to 1. Food is phenomenal. Whole country is accessible via an amazing coach bus system and i never felt unsafe or hassled. I did argentina bolivia and peru by myself last year with basic spanish.

I went backpacking in Cuba for two weeks last year. Go for it before the Americans come!
Allison
If you're thinking about going before winter, go to Europe. Otherwise I think Cuba is awesome. Havana, Viñales Valley. Beautiful country and uber safe!

Portugal is great. Southern Europe in general is good (especially if you're into Roman history).
But don't forget Europe in general, especially Northern Europe is EXTREMELY overrated. Don't fall for this trap, if you haven't already.
Though I would normally recommend the Middle East and Northern Africa, due to its political tensions, it is probably a bad idea.
Hence, I'm going to recommend Vietnam. After the Vietnam War, the communist allies were faced with trade embargos all over. So in a way, in some areas, Vietnam appears to be frozen in time (Similar to Cuba, North Korea).
In addition, there are many social issues in Vietnam you can observe on the streets. This includes the negative consequences brought upon by the French occupation.
As for expenses, price is cheap.
Another alternative is Indonesia. This country however, may appeal more to anthropology enthusiasts. (Good to compare how the Dutch portrays the VOC, and how the VOC was really like)
Gaby
Europe is overrated? sheesh that is seriously one sided opinion, let me guess you have Asian roots?
Lisa
i travelled some cities in eastern europe alone and had a great time! Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna. this was a few years ago but i'm sure it hasn't changed much... lol
Gaby
Vienna is in Austria and its not in Eastern Europe
Lisa
Gaby, i think everyone here knows what i meant, but thanks for clarifying Captain Geography!
Gaby
Lisa, I'm sure you'd feel offended if people confuse Canada with USA. When you chose to make a comment like that don't assume people knew what you meant, you clearly stated Vienna is in Eastern Europe, what is there to know?

Just came back from a 2 week Philippines adventure and met tons of solo travellers. 2 weeks feels like a month there. Has a mix of everything from island hopping to city life, and it's relatively cheap to stay and get around! I'd recommend El Nido (Palawan), Cebu & Manila. Boracay if you're looking to party. Take the island tours and pub crawls and you'll definitely meet some great people.

Are you in search of a wife?

Have you done much travelling? I think that can have a big impact on where you go.. I hadn't done much travelling when I took my first solo trip, so I went to europe for 2 months as it's a great intro to solo travelling. Next on my list is eastern asia, but who knows when that'll happen..

Japan is an amazing place! It's really safe and there's tons of things to do! Night busses tend to be quite cheap (about $45 from Tokyo to Osaka... one way I believe) but you could also consider getting a Japan Rail pass (only available to foreigners). Hitch hiking isn't really an option. Working away there is awesome, I'd especially recommend Helpx if you're looking to do that.

(Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand) and UAE. You can book a ticket Toronto-Thailand or Toronto-Malaysia via Dubai. Quite reasonable and you get two-three cultures in one trip. 2weeks enough time.
Denise
Portugal and Spain. Cheaper to fly into Portugal than Spain from YYZ. If you are looking for culture and architecture and food/wine, these two countries can't be beat!

SE Asia: inexpensive, generally very safe and easy to meet people. As a solo traveller, it can get very expensive since you'll have to cover the cost of accommodations on your own (unless you stay in hostels). It's really annoying. Also, after travelling solo through Africa and India (among other countries), I would say this: the perception of danger is almost always greater than the reality. I'd also recommend registering with Couchsurfing just to go to meetups (held everywhere in the world) and meet locals, like this: https://www.facebook.com/NotWithoutMyPassport/posts/973011996077379

Tips for Maximizing Your Solo Adventure
1. Embrace the Freedom
One of the greatest advantages of solo travel is the freedom to create your own schedule and tailor your experiences to your personal interests. Embrace this freedom by allowing yourself to be spontaneous and flexible. Don't be afraid to stray from the beaten path and discover hidden gems along the way.
2. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Solo travel presents the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone. Try new activities, strike up conversations with locals, and immerse yourself in unfamiliar cultural practices. These experiences will not only broaden your horizons but also foster personal growth and self-discovery.
3. Stay Safe and Trust Your Instincts
While solo travel can be incredibly rewarding, it's essential to prioritize your safety. Research your destination thoroughly, trust your instincts, and take necessary precautions. Consider joining local tours or activities to meet fellow travelers and benefit from the expertise of knowledgeable guides.
4. Connect with Locals and Fellow Travelers
One of the most enriching aspects of solo travel is the opportunity to connect with locals and fellow travelers. Participate in social activities, such as walking tours or language exchanges, to gain valuable insights into the local culture and make new friends along the way.
Wherever your solo adventure takes you, embrace the journey with an open mind and a sense of wonder. These experiences will not only create lasting memories but also shape you into a more confident, resilient, and culturally aware individual.
