If just for your phone contact your carrier. Just returned from Europe was $12/day with Koodo. Anytime we got to where there was free wifi I connected though. Depending on how long you are travelling might be just as cost as effective. Needed wifi for google maps and metro routes. Have a great trip

Maps.Me is an offline mapping app that worked very well for me in the Philippines and Vietnam. Much better than Google maps offline.

For maps, get Pocket Earth app. You don't need wifi. Your download you maps for offline use. It just uses your iPhone locator. I've used it in Europe, South Africa, Indonesia, Peru, Mexico and of course North America. It also has lots of travel info and Wikipedia info!

Just make sure you take your SIM card out... even if roam like home is on, if someone sends you an incoming text or call it’ll automatically turn on roam like home and you’ll get charged
