Looking for insider tips on navigating Okinawa, Japan and surrounding islands?

Try to spend some time on the islands off of the main island! We spent 2 night on Okinawa island and then 5 nights on Tokashiki Island, which is a short ferry ride away, and it was so beautiful. We basically had the whole island to ourselves! Only saw other tourists there twice and the other times the entire beach was just for us. We also saw way more while snorkeling and spent some time with sea turtles that were just chilling around the beach. Theres a ferry that goes in a loop around to a couple islands and I think they all have some accommodation on them. It's more expensive than staying on the main island but we all thought it was definitely worth it. Food is also different so try some of the local food
there's a fish market on the island that you can pick your own cut of fresh sashimi and they'll prepare it and bring it to you upstairs. Some of the best sashimi we had!

Zamami Island is also very nice. I was there in October. I think the island has about 300 residents, so it's great if you want to get away from the touristy stuff.

I second Zamami island. Was there in the month of April a couple of years ago and although the water was cool, it was totally swimmable and the snorkeling was great! The fish and coral are so colorful. There's also the aquarium on Okinawa with the whale sharks if you're into that.

Was it sunny and warm enough to tan in April?

Lisa not for the 2 days we were there, but we had flown all that way it didn't stop us from staying in or swimsuits on the beach or to go swim. I think April in general it's on the cooler side even when it's that far south. When we got back to Okinawa the weather went from cloudy to beautiful sunshine and was warmer. So I think it was like that when we were on Zamami it would've been nice for tanning
just don't count on it
