How to spend time in a stopover city without booking separate tickets?

Oh it's you! Some travel booking sites let you book multi-leg journeys - worth finding the ones that do? skyscanner, sadly, does not.

It's me! I don't know these sites very well. Any suggestions? I was hoping trying to book on air canada's site to take advantage of some Boxing Week deals.

Easiest way to do that with air canada is to call them and ask for an extended stop over. They generally are ok with it as they can then sell the second leg of your flight to another person and open that spot in advance.

I almost swear by itasoftware to check price (can't book on that site) and they do have multi-city options.
I just checked really really quickly on air canada's website, using multi-city... using your made up route (YYZ-YVR-NRT) with a 3 night stay in YVR, actually ended up being cheaper than YYZ-NRT return, even with the connection in Vancouver.

Watch out though... it really depends on the dates/day of the week you're flying. (Just like every other airline)

I've done that many times-- en route to Hawaii-- stopover in San Fran, or La for example.. pricing will remain the same only if it is in the flight routing... for example yyz to hnl has stop over in SFO, LAX, etc. I spoke to agent~ never tried online but I am sure you could as well.. price both to see if any major price increases?

I stayed for a few days in Germany on my way to Indonesia this past summer and booked through an aeroplane agent. So I would suggest calling a travel agent

If using ITA, read the rules for the specific fares quoted and it will explain where and when you can stop over at what cost. And where you miss spend a certain night to get a certain price.

Dumb question maybe, but if you are travelling to an overseas destination with a stopover in Canada (say YYZ-YVR-Japan) is it possible to spend a couple of nights at the stopover point, but do it on a single ticket? I don't know how, other than doing separate tickets for the two legs -- which is bound to be more expensive. Thoughts?
