We are planning a sixtieth anniversary vacation for my in laws. There will be 10 of us, children to seniors. We are thinking either the Caribbean or Hawaii. The area needs to be safe with activities for all ages. Any recommendations, anything to avoid?
TIA

From Calgary. Hawaii is a reasonable flight. Caribbean is to far for many seniors.

We have done the same for family Christmas. We found staying in condos through vrbo on Maui the best. The units were neighbouring and in the next complex and the group would get together in the pool areas for meals and come and go to the beach and trips as they wanted! Highly recommend.

my parents go to Jamaica and Mexico all the time and love it! I am not a fan of Hawaii for cost sake.

Renting a very large home with a pool in Cape Coral Florida is VERY reasonable. Warm weather, lots to do for young and old.

Stay at Honua Kai in Maui. Get condos in same building off vrbo. Get them facing the green courtyard in middle. The condos have “walls” that open up to the outside. Beautiful place.

We are mid 60s and spent a month in Belize this past Feb. Loved it. Direct flight from Calgary to Belize City. Nothing beats the Carribean. My opinion

Hawaii is just as far or farther to travel than many places in the Caribbean. Hawaii is also VERY expensive compared to many places in the Caribbean. I've been to Hawaii and to most places in the Caribbean. I'm also a senior. My choice, would be the Caribbean. Hands down.

Just consider going direct / non stop ( whatever it is called) if possible. Not sure what time of the year you going. We have been to Honua Kai on Kaanapali Beach for many years with our family and it has been perfect.

You might want to check out Belize as an option. Pelican Reef Resort on the Caye is quite nice and might work for you.

One consideration that has massively limited our extended family vacation options is Zika. If you have anyone pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant they may not consider a Zika area which eliminates a lot of places.
If Zika isn’t a concern and you’re willing to splurge beaches Turks and Caicos is amazing. The flights aren’t fantastic though.
Maui is a great option if you can rent a few condos in the same building.

We did a family vacation to Xcaret in playa del carmen Mexico last year, 10 people ages 5 to 89. Everyone had an amazing time. Definitely worth looking in to.

Planning the Perfect Multigenerational Vacation: Caribbean or Hawaii?

Celebrating a significant milestone like a 60th anniversary calls for a truly memorable vacation experience. With a group spanning from children to seniors, finding the perfect destination that caters to all ages and interests can be a daunting task. However, both the Caribbean and Hawaii offer a wealth of options that can make your family vacation unforgettable.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back island vibes. From family-friendly resorts to vibrant cultural experiences, this tropical paradise has something for everyone.

Pros:

  • Safety: Many Caribbean islands are relatively safe for travelers, with well-developed tourism infrastructures and low crime rates.
  • Activities: Snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, and water sports galore – the Caribbean is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
  • Variety: With diverse islands like Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic, you can tailor your vacation to suit your family's interests and preferences.

Considerations:

  • Hurricane Season: Depending on your travel dates, you may want to consider the Caribbean's hurricane season, typically from June to November.
  • Beach Crowds: Popular Caribbean destinations can get crowded during peak seasons, so plan accordingly if you prefer a more secluded experience.

Hawaii

Hawaii offers a unique blend of breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a diverse range of activities. From the iconic beaches of Oahu to the volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, this Pacific paradise is a dream destination for many.

Pros:

  • Safety: Hawaii is generally considered one of the safest travel destinations in the United States, with a low crime rate and excellent infrastructure.
  • Activities: Hiking, surfing, snorkeling, luaus, and volcano tours – Hawaii has something for every age group and interest.
  • Cultural Immersion: Explore the islands' rich Hawaiian culture through museums, historic sites, and traditional festivals.

Considerations:

  • Cost: Hawaii can be more expensive than some Caribbean destinations, especially when it comes to accommodations and dining.
  • Travel Time: Depending on your location, the travel time to Hawaii may be longer than some Caribbean islands.

Ultimately, both the Caribbean and Hawaii offer fantastic options for a multigenerational vacation. Consider your family's interests, budget, and travel preferences to help narrow down the perfect destination. Regardless of your choice, memories of a lifetime await as you celebrate this special occasion together.
