Question:

Looking for advice on travel to Hawaii with a 1 and 2 year old. Best Island? Lodging? Activity? We're flexible with everything except budget and dates. Looking at first week of August and trying to bring it as much under $4000 as possible. Purpose of trip is R&R and some discovery. Thanks!!!

For flights Allegiant out of Bellingham is best as long as you aren;t stuck on comfort or service (you get nothing on Allegiant, it's cramped and we'll never do it again, but for a budget) I would go Maui opposed to Oahu as Maui is a bit more laid back for a wee one, As for lodging it might be too late but try VRBO (vacation rental by owner) many places have weekly rentals and August is off season. There are many places on Maui that are cheap or free to go, Hana drive, cowboytown, etc....try and set up near Kehei as it is more central to everything and less expensive than Lahaina

well we stayed in October in Kehei got 16 nights for 1400, but if you have a week you can see a lot and I bet it won't be much more than 800? I just googled VRBO and there are openings in early August for 99 a night

Kamaole Sands in Kihei is lovely and kid friendly. I recommend a ground suite. The Grounds are so beautiful and it is right across the street from an amazing beach.

Been to lots of places in Hawaii and Kihei area on Maui is the best for kids. However, make sure to budget for a rental car, as you'll need one if you want to go anywhere more then walking distance from your hotel/condo. Good activities for small kids (besides the beach & pool) are the Maui Ocean centre & the sugar kane train ride in Lahaina. Have fun!

Try All Save Car Rentals in Kihei....very reasonable...they even picked us up from the house.....love them and their staff!

Kihe is the hottest dryest part of Maui....desert and very hot this time of year....

agree with Paula, lots to do in Waikiki for the whole family, you don't need a car, and street festivals all the time - also a lot cheaper than any of the other islands, great park beside the zoo, safe beach, nice walks at sunset - Waikiki for me, took my little guy there many times when he was a baby till he graduated

Billie how about my budget though? Is it unrealistic?

Profile picture of Natalia

The thing with Waikiki though, is that it's hard to get a condo for a reasonable price. It's mostly hotels so no kitchen, and then you're forced to eat out for every meal.

Waikiki is cheaper than any other island, by far, condo or not - the Ohana Hotels have kitchenettes in many of their rooms. Sunset Condo, Waikiki Banyan, many condos too - , I can look

Queen Kapiolani is reasonable, the Aston Hotels include Waikiki Sunset and Waikiki Banyan, both condos, looked at flight centre, they have packages with Ohana hotels - you have to ask for a kitchenette though. personally - a fridge is all I ever needed, cooking was not on the holiday menu and lots of reasonable eateries like Chili's -

After all this, thundershowers forecasted!!!!!

Profile picture of Natalia

Don't worry, thundershowers rarely last longer than 20 minutes in Hawaii. It's not the same as here where it rains all day.

Plus it's still very hot when it rains.

Hawaii with Toddlers: A Guide for Planning an Unforgettable Trip

Traveling with young children can be a daunting task, but it's definitely possible to have a wonderful vacation in Hawaii with your 1 and 2 year olds. Here are some tips to help you plan a trip that's both enjoyable and affordable:

Choosing the Best Island

Each of Hawaii's islands has its own unique character, so it's important to choose one that's a good fit for your family. If you're looking for a relaxed vacation with plenty of opportunities to explore nature, Maui or Kauai are great choices. If you're interested in more cultural experiences, Oahu is a good option. And if you're on a tight budget, Hawaii Island (the Big Island) offers the most affordable accommodations.

Finding Affordable Lodging

There are a number of ways to save money on lodging in Hawaii. One option is to book a vacation rental. Vacation rentals are often more spacious and affordable than hotel rooms, and they can be a great option for families with young children. Another option is to look for discounts on hotels. Many hotels offer discounts for AAA members, seniors, and military personnel.

Planning Activities

There are plenty of activities that are suitable for toddlers in Hawaii. Here are a few ideas:

* Visit the beach: Hawaii's beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, and they're a great place to relax and play with your kids.
* Go for a hike: There are many easy hiking trails in Hawaii that are perfect for toddlers.
* Visit a zoo or aquarium: The Honolulu Zoo and the Maui Ocean Center are both great options for families with young children.
* Take a boat tour: There are a number of boat tours that are suitable for toddlers. These tours can be a great way to see the islands from a different perspective.

Packing Tips

Be sure to pack light, as you'll be doing a lot of walking and carrying your kids. Here are a few essentials to bring:

* Diapers and wipes
* Swimsuits
* Sunscreen
* Hats
* Sunglasses
* Snacks
* Toys

Other Tips

* Be patient: Traveling with toddlers can be challenging at times, so it's important to be patient.
* Be flexible: Things don't always go according to plan when you're traveling with young children, so be prepared to be flexible.
* Have fun: Most importantly, don't forget to have fun! Hawaii is a beautiful place, and there's something for everyone to enjoy.

I hope these tips help you plan a wonderful trip to Hawaii with your toddlers.
