Good evening, any suggestions for side trip from Tokyo for 2 nights or 2 day trip staying at hotel in Tokyo? Trip will be second week of April next year. Hopefully places that are not commonly known for foreign travelers. Many thanks in advance

ai,

park with panormamic views and it's not kown by many foreigners) Also if you're in Osaka, Kobe and their famous steak restaurants are only a short 30 min bullet train ride away.
If you like Onsen I actually recommend a 2 day trip to Kusatsu Onsen (one of the most famous) in Gunma province. You can get there by train most of the way and a short bus ride. Once there and you have one of the ryokan's booked, you will have free access to almost ALL of the onsen/ryokan springs around the whole town area. There's so many different types of baths there.

Osaka and Kyoto are amazing places.
If you had the pick one I’d go Kyoto. I loved it there, the Fushimi Anari shrine is a really cool walk/explore.
We had the JR rail pass so we bounced around between Tokyo, Hakuba, Osaka and Kyoto.

The Nasu area is a great spot and a little more off the beaten track. About an hour train ride from Tokyo, the area is known for its hot springs and dairy. Cheese Garden is well known for its cheesecake and ice cream - I still dream about that cheesecake. Lots of great little Ryokans to stay at.

I stayed at Togawaso in Kawaguchiko. That area is a bit touristy but absolutely beautiful and I do recommend it. The Ryokan had free bike rentals. It was great.

I lived in Nagano for awhile. It’s gorgeous, only just over an hour on the Shinkansen. They have excellent food (well, really everywhere in Japan does), beautiful mountains and my second favourite temple in Japan (Zenkoji). Definitely more off the normal tourist path.

Unique Side Trips from Tokyo for 2 Nights

Visiting Tokyo is an experience in itself, but if you have a couple of extra days to spare, why not explore some lesser-known destinations around the city? Here are a few suggestions for unique side trips from Tokyo during the second week of April.

Nikko

Nikko is a stunning town nestled in the mountains, about two hours north of Tokyo. It's famous for its breathtaking shrines and temples, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nikko Toshogu, the lavishly decorated mausoleum of the Tokugawa shogun. The town is also surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, including waterfalls, hot springs, and hiking trails through the mountains.

Izu Peninsula

The Izu Peninsula is a picturesque coastal region southwest of Tokyo, accessible by train or car. It's known for its hot springs, rugged coastlines, and quaint fishing villages. One of the highlights is the Jogasaki Coast, a dramatic stretch of cliffs and rock formations. You can also explore the charming town of Kawazu, famous for its cherry blossom festival in early April.

Tochigi Prefecture

Tochigi Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, is a hidden gem for nature lovers and history buffs. Visit the Nasu Kogen Highlands for stunning hiking trails, hot springs, and stunning views of Mount Nasu. Alternatively, explore the Tochigi City, home to the impressive Tochigi Castle and the picturesque Futaarayama Shrine, set amidst ancient cedar trees.

Chichibu

Chichibu is a charming town located in the mountains northwest of Tokyo, known for its traditional crafts, hot springs, and natural beauty. Wander through the historic Chichibu Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in the Kanto region, or explore the Nagatoro Valley, a stunning gorge perfect for hiking and river rafting.

No matter which destination you choose, these side trips offer a unique and authentic glimpse into Japan's rich culture, history, and natural wonders, away from the bustling streets of Tokyo.
